... so reasonable he's had to shift between three counties despite being no older than me.
Those three being Surrey, West Sussex and East Sussex presumably?

You've gone off on one about this before, Richard, in the case of Luke Wright. I think you more or less accepted that you didn't know what you were talking about on that occasion, and I suspect the same may be true this time.

Yes, players move from one county to another in order to further his career. Shock! Horror!
Let's write him off with such other journeymen as SF Barnes and Don Bradman.

Yeah, and being a "always be happy with your lot unless you're very unhappy" type I just can't really understand that. The way I see it, Hamilton-Brown is not going to get any better chance, nor be any more successful, at Sussex as anywhere. The only way he's going to be successful is to put in all the effort he can into improving himself; the only way he's going to move up a level is to perform superbly at whatever level he's being allowed.

Moving about will not make you better, and only by getting better will you make the step up.
Moving does help people get a break though. You can learn more by gaining experience playing for a county than you do playing second XI cricket, because you're testing yourself against better players, and I expect you also have more support.

There are a number of players who have gained one way or another from moving teams. Gilchrist, Watson, Hauritz, Swann, Sidebottom. I'm trying to think of a young England player who might have had a positive move... I'm not sure I can off the top of my head, but perhaps the old 18 county system and fewer international players meant it was less of an issue in the past.

Edit: Tim Ambrose, there we are.

Bill Lockwood. Moved to Surrey as a youngster due to limited first team opportunities at Notts. Learned lots from Lohmann whilst at Surrey and became arguably the best bowler in the world.

Jonathan Clare, couldn't get a game for Lancashire second XI, went to Derbyshire and got in to the academy last winter. Would you suggest he should just give up on any cricket career because he happened to be born and grew up in a county with so many fast bowlers?

Was just talking to Gelman about this on MSN earlier, but I can't see what Hauritz has to offer really, with Clark and Siddle both capable of bowling pretty tight spells. Unless there's expected to be a great deal of turn in one of the surfaces I think Australia would be best off with Johnson, Siddle, Clark and Lee, assuming they all bowl decently in the warmups.

I expect Hauritz will be picked anyway though, probably with Clark left out.
Yeah, that would be madness but it'll probably happen.

Unusual to leave out a Test Cricketer who's bowling average is 22. Complete madness I say.

On to another matter, I really wish we had a proper fit reserve batsman. Someone like Marcus North shouldn't be a shoe in for a Test spot. Sound First Class performer but definite number 6 on the first morning of an Ashes Test? I think not. I would love a hungry Hodge at 6. I would back him to maintain his Test average for the duration of the series if given the chance.

Can't believe how many no-balls where bowled on day 2. Of course bowlers need to establish a rythm again, but 22 is far too many.

Hauritz bowling 3? Was he bowling medium-pacers or something? Very dissapointing.

Good workout for all bowlers involved. Would beat the point of warm-up games if Australia rolled Sussex in under 50 overs.

Who were you playing for, Social? Was this FC cricket?
2nd X1, invitationals, that sort of stuff

Hove generally turned out in absolutely immaculate condition and much better than some of the test grounds at the time

going to be tough to pick hauritz after this, unless he puts in something special before the 1st test.

expecting johnson, siddle, hilfenhaus and clark, lee to miss out until an injury.

Is this a first-class match? I see that Cricinfo aren't giving live first-class career stats so I assume it may not be. I assume that if it's not FC, it's because it's 12-a-side.

Seems a bit of a shame really. If a young player like (say) Andy Hodd were to score 150 in the second innings, it's a bit harsh on him to deny him that from his career record on the grounds that it's a 12-a-side game, particularly since the other side will have one more bowler than normal.

Spot on, on all counts.

No fc status due to 12 a side

No but there are very brief highlights from each day's play on the Sussex CCC website:

SCTV Player - Sussex TV - Sussex County Cricket Club

I remember reading in another post that the Lions match will be televised though.
Cheers for the link Zaremba.

Thought Clark looked terrific in the highlights.

Hauritz was just bowling so poorly, not creating anything that about 30 other off spinners in Australia could do.

That leave by Yardy was a shocker too.

Apparently he was with Imran Khan at Sussex in some way, but he's never let on whether he actually played First-Class cricket or not IIRR.
Best mate in Eng played for Sussex with Imran and they became very goods friends so naturally we spent quite a bit of time together

Imran then played cricket in Oz where I met him again

Have caught up with him from time to time over the years but wouldnt go as far to say that we are friends.

However, the only bat I've still got is one that he gave me after breaking mine whilst facing Malcom Marshall in county cricket
