and he can offer up a very real part time spin option.Because he averages 52 with the bat in the past four seasons of FC cricket on a not-always-flat track.

He's certainly favourite to be our next test debutant, although I'm not convinced he's ready. I can only go by his stats, but I don't see that he's done enough yet as a bowler in FC cricket to justify the plaudits and I hope that Swann stays fit all summer. However, if Swann does get crocked, then Rashid only has to do respectably in the CC to overtake Panesar. Maybe that's already happened since MP can't buy a wicket even in D2 right now.Think Rashid is very close to getting second in line. Bowled a beaut yesterday to get AB which would have done him in any situation. Helps that he can field and bat as well.
Yes. But seeing him in ODI cricket, it is clear he aint a 50 ave batsman - and would never replicate such perfomances in test. One needs to question that standard of county bowling he has faced also.Because he averages 52 with the bat in the past four seasons of FC cricket on a not-always-flat track.
He hasn't the best OD record anyway, so why would you expect him to do particularly well in ODI's?Yes. But seeing him in ODI cricket, it is clear he aint a 50 ave batsman - and would never replicate such perfomances in test. One needs to question that standard of county bowling he has faced also.
Where are you getting this stuff? What proof do you have?and would never replicate such perfomances in test.
The same quality of bowling that Pietersen and every other English batsmen has faced? His record in FC is better than most of the English bats, so why would he fare worse? (If he is fit.)One needs to question that standard of county bowling he has faced also.
I did not say i expect/expecting to have a fantastic ODI record. I am saying based on what i've seen on him ODI plus some domestic OD games on TV. There is no way he should be considered for test matches as # 6 batsman, who can aslo give quality overs of spin.He hasn't the best OD record anyway, so why would you expect him to do particularly well in ODI's?.
The same way SA would not pick Botha in their test side as a second spinner, IND wont pick Y Pathan, AUS didn't pick Ian Harvey. Patel just comes across as one of those players, that if he has a solid ODI career - you still wont see potential test match credentials in him.Where are you getting this stuff? What proof do you have?.
You need to understand the dynmaics of county system over here. The FC season has two divisions. Divison 1 is of high standard, if a player does well in division 2 it usually a poor guide to how he would do in tests. The same quality of bowling that Pietersen and every other English batsmen has faced? One must never forget KP is an import.
Most of ENG best bastmen since the dark 90s, starting from Vaughan have averaged fairly modestly in FC. While recently you have the likes of Bell & Cook averaging big but question marks remain over their temperament.
So atthough the FC system here is structed fairly solid, the results are a bit misleading.

I wouldn't say so. Not with Mahmood anyway, the anti-Mahmood brigade are massive Lancs fans so there's no way in hell they're happy when he bowls crap.Anyway, joking aside. It's nice to see Mahmood and Harmison get a bagful each, seems to me a lot of people on this forum get some sort of sick pleasure over watching these lads fail. Whilst neither should be near the England side at present, English bowlers taking lots of wickets for not many runs is always a positive sign. Mahmood especially, if he can sort out his accurary issues he could still have an international future ahead of him, realise this is a big if though.
Not bad from this Bairstow lad either on debut! Hope he has a big career ahead of him after what happened to his Dad. A real cricketing tragedy.
