Nice to get back on track. Seem to recall I've beaten Olesen before, could be wrong.

Also, 'mon the Drakester.
Lucky I made Carter tired from his first round encounter.

Pleased to have won the doubles match, looks like losing the first set is the way to go these days.

Thursday - Canada Masters - Montréal (Canada)

Men's Singles (Seeds - Finals - Section 1 - Section 2 - Section 3 - Section 4)
Men's Doubles (Top Half - Bottom Half)

  • Third seed Radek Špidlá has advanced to his third ATP Masters Series quarterfinal after he prevailed in a tough affair against CWLand's Jefferson Drake on the Grandstand court. Fresh off a surprise of sorts against Canada's Davis Kennedy in the second round, Drake looked confident against the two-time Grand Slam finalist as he came back from a break down to take the first set to a tiebreaker. But after being 4-1 up in the breaker, Drake blew his chance to take the first set as he double faulted twice to hand Špidlá an opening. The world No. 4 took it with both hands to seal the first set with a powerful forehand winner at the net, and quickly set about shooting to a 2-0 lead in the second. This time Drake could not claw back from a break down as the Czech giant hit stride in his first outing on one of the main courts - advancing to a quarterfinal clash with Rick Henson in straight sets. (Špidlá d. Drake, 7-6(5), 6-4)
  • Sven Oxenstierna, however, put in a less convincing display earlier as he was smashed in straight sets by world No. 12 Rasmus Olesen. The tall Dane played some superb tennis against Oxenstierna as the sixth seed struggled to get into points against his fellow European. Despite taking a break of service in the second set, Oxenstierna was continually broken by Olesen who advanced to his second ATP Masters Series quarterfinal in one hour and four minutes. He now faces world No. 1 Daniel Páez Blanco who he managed to beat in their last meeting at Halle. (Olesen d. Oxenstierna, 6-1, 6-2)
  • Elsewhere, world No. 2 Jason Hall looks odds on to regain his world No. 1 ranking after disposing of fellow Wimbledon semifinalist Zoltán Varga 6-1, 6-4. Current number one Blanco was slower to start, as he was forced to come from a set down to beat China's Li Wang on Centre Court 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. In the biggest upset of the day, unseeded Italian Antonio Bachunelli looks certain to return to the world's top 30 after upstaging Darcy Cowan in a scrappy three-hour affair on the Grandstand Court. Bachunelli returned brilliantly against an increasingly frustrated Cowan as he secured an upset victory in the longest match of the week 6-7(3), 7-5, 7-5. He now faces fourth seed Radivoj Daneu who crushed David Champion 6-2, 6-3.

  • Seeded players out: Miroslav Brdar; Darcy Cowan; Jefferson Drake; Sven Oxenstierna; Zoltán Varga.
  • The indifferent form of doubles team Heath Davis and Jojo Mustard continued in the second round of the men's draw as they were beaten in straight sets by Slovak-Belarusian duo Andrej Konc and Evgeniy Maximov. In their third meeting (with a previous record of 1-1), Konc and Maximov had already been forced to come from a set down in the first match of the day against Patrick Pascaul and Michel Paquette. Things started just as slowly here as the fifth seeds comfortably breezed through the first set and looked like taking a pretty easy victory against their rivals. But Konc and Maximov fought back in a spirited display to claim the second set in a tiebreaker thanks to some decisive serving from the big man Maximov. In the match tiebreaker, the score was locked at 3-3 before a backhand from Mustard fell the wrong side of the net and Davis sent his volley into it to hand the underdogs a double break. That was all she wrote as they took seven of the last eight points to secure a surprising three-set upset. (Konc / Maximov d. Davis / Mustard, 2-6, 7-6(2), [10-4])
  • Jefferson Drake and Martti Korpinen also had a tough second round clash, but managed to prevail against Russian pair Dmitry Orlov and Vladimir Gryzlov in straight tiebreakers. Gryzlov and Orlov had previously come from a set down to beat Rory Cross and Ivan Vuka, but showed no signs of weariness against the CWLand pair including Drake who had already been on court for over two hours in singles competition. But the third seeds proved too good when it came to crunch time of both sets and ultimately edged a danger game to advance to the quarterfinals. (Drake / Korpinen d. Gryzlov / Orlov, 7-6(6), 7-6(1))
  • Their opponents will be makeshift pair Rob Bowenburg and Hayden Onwye after the CWLand-Moroccan combination made sure that coming from a set down was the flavour of the day against eighth seeds Mark Harmel and Yves Parmentier. The underdogs dropped the first set in a tiebreaker in disappointing fashion, but proved they had more gas in the tank in the second as they stormed back to claim the set 6-3. But it was the match tiebreaker that had the crowd enthralled as it lasted nearly half an hour following some awesome rallies that saw the unseeded pair take the win 13-11. (Bowenburg / H Onwye d. Harmel / Parmentier, 6-7(5), 6-3, [13-11])
  • In other action, Ion Andueza and Sanchez Emelio took advantage of a tired Daniel Páez Blanco and Sergio Joaquin to set up a clash with top seeds Hugh James and Ralph Robinson 6-1, 6-2. World No. 2 in singles Jason Hall and fellow American Jason Bradley also fell to a defeat as Sandro Bachunelli and Hicham Hadir advanced to the quarterfinals 7-5, 6-2.

  • Seeded players out: Heath Davis/Jojo Mustard; Mark Harmel/Yves Parmentier.
Open Castilla y Leon
2nd Round - Segovia (Spain)

Men's Singles (Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's Doubles (Doubles)

  • Suryakant Singh's ability to produce upsets continued in the second round of the Challenger in Segovia as he upstaged top seed Viktor Vuriak in three sets. Looking increasingly at home on the clay, Singh took the first set thanks to an early break of service, but looked destined for a loss as Vuriak took the second in under half an hour. But the match petered out to a third set tiebreaker where Singh stunned the Spanish 'crowd' to secure a quarterfinal clash with Orazio Rizzo of Italy. (Singh d. Vuriak, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(2))
  • David Briggs, however, could not produce an upset as he was crushed in the third set by Belarus' Denis Isaev. Isaev surprisingly dropped the second set to the eager Briggs, before finding his steel to show why he is a top 100 player in a brutal third set which lasted just twenty-one minutes. (Isaev d. Briggs, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0)

  • Seeded players out: Aldo Marín; Néstor Moreno; Viktor Vuriak.
  • Teaming with Wimbledon doubles semifinalist Yordan Zakov did little to help Suryakant Singh's doubles debut as the pair were smashed by cohesive Russian top seeds Sergey Malachenko and Alexey Yarkin. Unable to knock off two top seeds in the one day, Singh and Zakov meekly succumbed to defeat against the team ranked 16th on the ATP Doubles Race.

  • Seeded players out: Lars Baier; Denis Isaev.

Day Five Schedule

---

Whilst it is a disappointing loss for Davis and Mustard, Konc-Maximov are pretty much the hardest non-seeded duo in the draw (apart from maybe Bowenburg-Onwye). Developing a pretty cool rivalry, too.

French Open- 3R - Konc/Maximov d. Davis/Mustard 46 62 63
Wimbledon- 3R - Davis/Mustard d. Konc/Maximov 64 46 64 61

Arrggghh. I'm getting so infuriated with this. Can't seem to win a solo game of pass-the-****ing-parcel at the moment. Haven't had a decent victory in a good while. What can a guy do? I think I'll go out and beat on some Slovak-Belorussians.

Wildcards named for CW Open

Two weeks out from the inaugural CW Open, the CWTA has named eight players who have received wildcards into the main draw. As part of the ongoing agreement with Tennis Australia and the Fédération Française de Tennis, two of the wildcards were given to players from those respective nations. The CW Open gets underway in Nixonstown on August 31, with the qualifying draw the week before.

WILDCARDS:

Matt Bre

Alex de Wet

Spas Delev

Martti Korpinen

Sébastien Lachance (FFA)

Scotland Rivers

Suryakant Singh

Harry Thompson (TA)

---

Qualifying will begin the same week as the tournament in Pickford, so guys who won't play main draw of the CW Open and didn't receive a wildcard (Banks, Stakhanov, Briggs, etc.) have the choice to play Pickford or the Challenger in Karshi (and then Challengers throughout the CW Open), or the quallies.

Friday - Canada Masters - Montréal (Canada)

Men's Singles (Seeds - Finals - Section 1 - Section 2 - Section 3 - Section 4)
Men's Doubles (Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)

  • Jason Hall has regained the world No. 1 spot for the first time since the French Open after comprehensively destroying Hungary's József Boros in the quarterfinals of the Rogers Cup. In the penultimate game on Centre Court, Hall took less than an hour to dispatch his thoroughly unimpressive opponent to head into the semifinals as overwhelming favourite to take the tournament. Hall's ascention to the number one spot was secured as Spain's Daniel Páez Blanco lost in straight sets to Denmark's Rasmus Olesen. Olesen saved four set points in the first set tiebreaker to steal it 7-6, and his prospects were further buoyed by Blanco rolling his ankle early in the second set. Reduced to hobbling for much of the set, Blanco put up a fighting display but his dream of a hard court title fell away again 7-6(6), 6-4.
  • The upset of the day, however, came from Italy's Antonio Bachunelli whose dream run continued with a come-from-behind boilover against world No. 3 Radivoj Daneu. Bachunelli was thumped in the first set tiebreaker 7-1, but like he did yesterday against Cowan stormed back with a superb second set. Unlike his third round clash, though, he met little resistance and ran past the Indian Wells and Miami champion 6-7(1), 6-1, 6-4. His opponent will be Radek Špidlá who reclaimed the world No. 3 spot in a marathon third set tiebreaker in the day's best match against the brave Rick Henson 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(9).

  • Seeded players out: József Boros; Daniel Páez Blanco; Radivoj Daneu.
  • Third seeded CWLand pair Jefferson Drake and Martti Korpinen will be forced to beat the world's best doubles team to book a place in the final after they edged a tight contest against against Rob Bowenburg and Hayden Onwye. Bowenburg and Onwye will not team together next week with news brother Ross Onwye will return at the Clowich Masters, but they fought bravely against the highly fancied duo. Drake and Korpinen continued their fine touch in tiebreakers after putting together a classy win to set up a clash with Hugh James and Ralph Robinson. (Drake / Korpinen d. Bowenburg / H Onwye, 6-4, 7-6(4))
  • There was a boilover on the other side of the draw as Andrej Konc and Evgeniy Maximov came from a set down for the third time this week to stun Wimbledon champ Sandro Bachunelli and Hicham Hadir. The Slovak-Belarusian pair face seventh seeds Morton Blundell and Carlos Machado who advanced by walkover with Antonio Bachunelli sealing a spot in the semifinals of the singles draw.

  • Seeded players out: Ion Andueza/Sanchez Emelio; Sandro Bachunelli/Hicham Hadir.

Quarter Finals - Segovia (Spain)

Men's Singles (Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's Doubles (Doubles)

  • Suryakant Singh gave up a massive chance of moving well inside the world's top 150 in the Tretorn Serie+ Challenger in Segovia overnight. Taking the first set against little known Italian qualifier Orazio Rizzo, Singh failed to capitalise on his early lead to let the world No. 270 back into the match. Taking the second set, Rizzo calmly took the decider to set up a tough semifinal showdown with Marc Carretero.
  • The other semifinal pits Samarkand runner up Javier Villaneuva and India's Ritwik Bhutia against each other. Villaneuva proved too good for Denis Isaev 6-0, 6-2, whilst world No. 260 Bhutia showed his undoubted class in a stunning upset of world No. 63 Valter Cordiero 7-5, 7-5.

  • Seeded players out: Valter Cordiero; Denis Isaev.
  • Seeded players out: None.

Saturday - Canada Masters - Montréal (Canada)

Men's Singles (Seeds - Finals - Section 1 - Section 2 - Section 3 - Section 4)
Men's Doubles (Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)

  • New World No. 1 Jason Hall and Rasmus Olesen will face off in the final of the Canada Masters in Montréal fit and firing after both men claimed straightforward semifinal victories. The giant-killing run of Antonio Bachunelli did not continue in the day's first match as Olesen ran through the man who had beaten two of the world's top five 6-1, 6-1. Whilst Olesen has not lost a set since his first appearance on court this tournament, Hall extended his streak of sets won to twenty since the second set in his Davis Cup match against Nilikar Midid. Hall had little trouble in disposing of new world No. 3 Radek Špidlá 6-3, 6-2 in a measure of revenge for his loss at Queen's.

  • Seeded players out: Radek Špidlá.
  • Third seeds Jefferson Drake and Martti Korpinen have advanced to a third career doubles final after a dramatic victory over world No. 1 pair Hugh James and Ralph Robinson. In an awesome match to end the day on Centre Court, the four men enthralled the diminishing crowd well into the night in a two and a half hour extravaganza over three sets. In the match tiebreaker, James and Robinson were forced to save four match points before finally succumbing on the CWLanders' fifth attempt as Drake and Korpinen secured a brilliant win. (Drake / Korpinen d. James / Robinson, 7-6(3), 4-6, [12-10])
  • They face unseeded duo Andrej Konc and Evgeniy Maximov in the final after they came back from a set down for the fourth consecutive time. Seventh seeds Morton Blundell and Carlos Machado took the first set 6-4, before the Slovak-Belarusian pair hit their straps and roared into the finals with their most convincing win yet 4-6, 6-1, 10-2.

  • Seeded players out: Hugh James/Ralph Robinson; Morton Blundell/Carlos Machado.
Open Castilla y Leon
Semi Finals - Segovia (Spain)

Men's Singles (Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's Doubles (Doubles)

  • It will be an all-Spanish affair in the final in Segovia after sixth seed Marc Carretero and Javier Villaneuva took straight sets victories in their semifinals. Carretero, billed as a future star of Spanish tennis, had little trouble disposing of Orazio Rizzo, the Italian qualifier, as he picked up a 6-0, 6-4 win. Villaneuva was more rigorously tested by Ritwik Bhutia, but scraped over the line with a 6-3, 7-5. Both men will try for their second Challenger titles of the season.

  • Seeded players out: None.
  • Bhutia and Harpreet Gupte advanced to their second final of the season with a 6-3, 2-6, 10-4 upset of top seeds Sergey Malachenko and Alexey Yarkin. They'll hope to atone for their loss in the final of Ramat Hasharon against second seeds Jean Tiquet and Denis Prevost who smashed Mario Acosta and Gonzalo Castro 6-2, 6-2.

  • Seeded players out: Sergey Malachenko/Alexey Yarkin.
