Asia, Wednesday

11.00, Seoul, grp 2: South Korea 0-0 Saudi Arabia (Asian football: go here for all your 0-0 goodness.)
14.30, Tehran, grp 2: Iran 1-0 UAE (Iran emphatically the better side, staying in theoretical contention, but go to the hardest place to win on the Asian continent needing three points just to make the play-offs.)

Code:
7 games unless stated
Group 1 Group 2
Australia 10-0 17 Q South Korea12-3 15 Q
Japan 9-3 15 Q North Korea 7-5 11
------------------- -------------------
Bahrain 5-8 7 Saudi Arabia8-8 11

Qatar (8) 4-13 6 E Iran 7-6 10
Uzb'stan 5-9 4 UAE (8) 6-17 2 E
Qualification scenarios:
Group 1: Bahrain play Uzbekistan at home; winner makes the play-offs, a draw sends Bahrain through.
Group 2: North Korea play Saudi Arabia at home. Winner qualifies for South Africa. A draw guarantees North Korea at least play-offs. If Saudi Arabia lose, they'll have to hope Iran lose as well. A possible scenario is a one-goal win for Saudi Arabia and a draw in South Korea, leaving the last play-off place open to goals scored between North Korea and Iran.

Europe

15.45, Skopje, grp 9: FYR Macedonia 2-0 Iceland (Morgunbladid's sport story of the night concerned the handball team's eight-goal win over Belgium. The team are eliminated completely.)
17.00, Göteborg, grp 1: Sweden 4-0 Malta (And there's another meaningless match to boost goal difference.)
17.00, Kyiv, grp 6: Ukraine 2-1 Kazakhstan (I can't get the Kazakhs. Most games they play rubbish and then suddenly they turn up and score the first goal in Kyiv. Ukraine still won thanks to a brace from Nazarenko.)
17.30, Helsinki, grp 4: Finland 0-3 Russia (an old Sami Hyypiä tasted the wrath of Russian strikers Zyryanov and Kerzhakov, as Russia confirm this group is a two-horse race.)
18.15, Tórshavn, grp 7: Faroe Islands 0-2 Serbia (No upset, but the Faroes goal difference actually isn't that bad. Well, when compared to 2-25 in Andorra, 0-21 on Malta and 1-32 at San Marino, anyway.9
18.45, Rotterdam, grp 9: Netherlands 2-0 Norway (Um, yeah. Netherlands too good. They have three times the points of any other team - not that they wouldn't have qualified, but the opposition really is shambolic. It does look like the least-points rule might work.)
19.15, London, grp 6: England 6-0 Andorra

Going to check our stadium out on Tuesday, for the British Lions rugby game.. I must say the grounds are looking world class now..

Oh, and just found out I'm mates with Danny Jordaan (chief person of the WC2010) 's son.. He was certainly very modest about that..

edit - just read that NZ were ahead of Italy at half-time, guess they never quite pulled it off

One reason the top and middle ranked European teams probably favour keeping the minnows in the qualifying groups is that they seriously boost the rankings.

wins against European opposition has a bonus attached to it no matter how bad they are, just because they play in Europe Confederation.

An example of how this effects rankings is that a gimme game for say England against Andora is going to get more ranking points than the likes of Australia or Japan playing against a low ranked, but competitive Asian opponent. This keeps top European teams at the top of the rankings. It also effects South American teams because they don't have any minnows in their confederation (any team in SA is capable of beating any other on a given day).

I know rankings should not be taken too seriously, but they do have a value in terms of marketing and sponsorship. At the moment they are being seriously distorted by Pub teams in Europe and give off more than a hint of European propoganda.

If FIFA wants the rankings to be taken seriously and offer fairness to all nations, then they must compell UEFA to implement a two stage qualification.

Rant over.

A two stage qualification would be fantastic. Europe is far underrepresented at the WC. Could actually get a WC representative of the best teams in the World rather than the best teams from each region. :)

Is it up to FIFA or UEFA how the qualification for Europe is done? I always thought that it was FIFA's decision to make, probably wrong.

Wouldn't speak too highly of unfairness against Asia, to be fair. The quality of football there suggests the confederation should get about 3 spots in the World Cup but because there are 53 voting nations you get 4.5.

If they really cared about the rankings being fair they'd implement the Elo ratings, but they have to invent something so it looks right (which it really doesn't because it changes after every continental championship...)

Wafer would be my guess. FIFA just alot the number of places we get.

I imagine we give the smaller nations a full program because their votes are handy to whomever courts them. Back in the day San Marino, Andorra & Lichtenstein didn't get a spot in qualifying so it's a fairly recent development. Plus with the break up of Yugoslavia, USSR & Czechoslovakia we get multiple nations where once we had one.

Say what you like about communism, it made qualifying less tedious. :p

CONCACAF

Thursday

01.30, San Pedro Sula: Honduras 1-0 El Salvador (Honduras start the run of home matches well, but suffer a yellow card to their perhaps biggest star, Wilson Palacios, which puts him out of August's vital match at home to Costa Rica
01.30, Ciudad de Mexico: Mexico 2-1 Trinidad and Tobago (no such luck...Liam's team is out, while Mexico finally produced chances. Despite peppering the Trinidad goalkeeper, they "only" won 2-1, but it does look like Aguirre's side are back to making the Azteca a fortress.)

Code:
Costa Rica 5 4 0 1 9-5 12
USA 5 3 1 1 10-6 10
Honduras 5 2 1 2 6-6 7

South America

21.00, Quito: Ecuador 2-0 Argentina ( OK, to be fair, they lost here the last time around as well, but it's a shame Uruguay have lost form or Argentina might have to go through play-offs. Oh wait, they'll beat Honduras 12-0. Never mind.
23.00, Medellín: Colombia 1-0 Peru (the Colombian goal-machine continues. Seven goals in 14 encounters.
Thursday 00.50, Recife: Brazil 2-1 Paraguay (despite an early goal, Dunga's side came back with some luck to grab three points over the injury-ravaged visitors, who are probably thankful that three of their last four games are at home.)
01.00, Puerto Ordaz: Venezuela 2-2 Uruguay (Diego Forlán dominated, scoring once, but couldn't put the ball in the net in the dying minutes, and local hero, veteran and free-kick specialist José Manuel Rey secured the one point for the hosts. They need a win in Chile or Brazil to have any realistic chance, however.)
01.00, Santiago de Chile: Chile 4-0 Bolivia (well, that's Bolivia dispatched. Chile on a massive run, having leapt 23 places on the Elo rankings in the past year with wins over Colombia, Mexico, Argentina, Peru and Paraguay. They've had some appalling results in friendlies, though.)

Code:
Brazil 14 7 6 1 25-6 27
Chile 14 8 2 4 23-14 26
Paraguay 14 7 3 4 20-13 24
Argentina 14 6 4 4 19-15 22

Colombia 14 4 5 5 7-11 17
Venezuela 14 5 2 7 17-24 17
Bolivia 14 3 3 8 19-30 12

I guess it proves that Boliva are rubbish when they are not playing at over 3,000m above sea level.

looked at the formula and still not that impressed. In fact this formula could even be worse than the official one considering it's bias towards historical achievenment. Would be a step backwards and doesn't address most of the problems with the current system.

Bias towards historical achievements? Er...yes, that's how you found a rating system - by looking at historical achievements of each team. If teams from Asia start doing well at the World Cup and Confederations Cup, points will drift over to that confederation, and other teams will be lifted when they beat those teams which have done well.
