Plenty of other regions have staggered qualification, the time has surely come for Europe to do the same. I would go a little further than you Brumby as all you are doing is eliminating 9 teams. I would stick the bottom 20(ish) into 4 groups with the winners joining the main qualification stages. Or something like that. Dunno if time would allow it, but if this was cricket then Lampard's goals/game ratio would be furiously recalculated with games like this removed.
Yeah. Shouldn't be a problem to implement it either; pre-qualifying can run from March to September, as it will involve teams that are not in the World Cup anyway. Should be enough time to run groups of 4.

Luxembourg did beat Switzerland though.

I think mid-sized nations (like my own, who are currently being roundly embarrassed at De Kuip) resent the idea because they know the next step is the big five demanding direct qualification.

San marino are the biggest joke. I remember needing to produce a goal difference swing of 8 on Holland in 93, normally you just write these things off but as we were playing San marino it was obviously feasible.

Stuart Pearce, of course, had other ideas

7-1 it finished IIRC, but Holland won anyway

Who would this be?

England, France, Italy, Spain, Germany.
Oh. Well i dont think these nations would demand automatic qualification if thats the case. Keeping teams like Andorra & San Marino in a separate group - instead of the main WC of EURO qualify group, is something that should happen TBH.

Haha, was that aimed at his "we could have played without a goalkeeper" comment by any chance?

Turning over now, Batman's on E4+1. Let me know if I miss anything of interest, cbf to look it up.

Think they'd be quite happy to form a meaningless "Internationals Series" among themselves in preparation for the big one. Would get a full house of corporate suits who pay big money every single match, plus more attractive to international broadcasters.

That said, I agree that this match is fairly pointless and that eight groups of five would be much better. (Would also avoid the worst team being denied play-off.)
