Who would you pick in the Greatest Cricket XI of YOUR Lifetime?

U19 Debutant
1. Barry Richards
2. Gavaskar
3. Viv Richards
4. Tendulkar
5. Sobers
6. Gilchrist
7. Imran Khan
8. Marshall
9. Warne
10. Lillee
11. Murali

Looks like (apart from SJS) I'm one of the few posters here who saw the great players of the 1960's and early 70's. However, my team includes only two players from that era - Barry Richards and Sobers - and neither should be a surprise.

I can't do an aesthetic all-time XI, I have about 5 players taking up the No. 3 and 4 positions! Lol.

I agree with Crowe over Ponting personally. Much classier and Ponting's 1,000+ run seasons have only come since flat batsmen-friendly wickets came to the fore (2002-). Coincedence?

Gower over Tendulkar I don't agree with. Tendulkar is the best batsman I've seen, his statistics are nowhere near what they should be for a man of that talent level.

Though, I have to say Gower is our best batsman IMO. His stats, like Sachin, don't reflect how good he really was. He deserved to have a 50+ average, 30+ centuries, 10,000+ runs, and a triple century to his name.

i agree. but would like to know who you would go for if pressed to choose two specialist openers.

also, g chappell retired just before you were born. so in the context of the thread you should try to nominate a replacement for him

Nice XI, but no spinner at all?

I knew from your sig you wouldn't pick Shane or Murali, but no Kumble either to give some variation on turning or variable wickets?

2 specialist openers?

Gavaskar played 203 of his 214 innings as opener.

I understand where SilentStriker is coming from. I wouldn't have Greg Chappell opening, but would have Allan Border opening in my all-time Aussie XI.

A number of moderate scoring (in terms of SR not runs) middle-order players would be adept as an opener because they often saw (and dealt with) the 2nd new ball.

Gundappa Viswanath, Graham Thorpe and Allan Border come to mind. All had the ability to jump on poor bowling (Viswanath most notably against us. Lol) but generally went at 45-52 runs per 100 balls. The only problem is that they generally liked to get in whilst the ball is old, however long-term adjustment wouldn't have been a problem for those players IMO.

WEll, I have just those two PLUS Benaud. I prefer Benaud over Warne for reasons similar to why people prefer Gilchrist over Knott, Bob Taylor or Ian Healy :)

Silent Striker has a virulent hatred of all slow bowlers.

Re the middle order opener question, agree some middle order players could do it, but saying that they dealt with the second new ball means they could open is a bit wrong IMO. Normally such a batsman would be set by the time the new ball was taken, the opposing bowlers won't be as fresh, and if your teams innings has lasted 80 overs and your middle order are still in, they're probably on their way to a decent total. Combined with pitches tending to be at their liveliest at the start of day 1, the prospect of facing completely fresh bowlers with the score nil-all is a different challenge.

Yes, that is true. He retired in January, while I was born in June.

So that makes it really really tough. No one person is the obvious choice, but I am going to go with:

  1. Gavaskar
  2. Gooch
  3. Waugh
  4. Tendulkar
  5. Lara
  6. Border
  7. Gilchrist
  8. Imran
  9. Marshall
  10. Ambrose
  11. McGrath

Gooch averaged 46 between 1985-1995, and I've always liked him, so he makes it to the top of the list with several people close behind. I also redid my middle order a little bit. I don't think I need Kallis, I'm going to go with Border there - I'm happy with a four man attack. And I want someone who will piss people off, so I'm going to go with Steve Waugh at #3.

Nice XI, but no spinner at all?

If I was going to pick a spinner, it would be Warne or Murali. I think both of them are overrated as bowlers, but as spinners they are far ahead of everyone else. Kumble and others are definitely second tier spinners, and I'm a huge Kumble fan - I consider him the most valuable Indian cricketer of the last twenty years. Out of Warne and Murali, It would probably be Warne due to his batting and captaincy, but I really don't see a need to pick them with the quality and quantity of fast bowlers we have here.

Silent Striker has a virulent hatred of all slow bowlers.
I make fun of that, but I don't think that's true. I enjoy watching them if they are bowling real well, but I think people place too much importance in them for Test match cricket. They are more useful in a format like T20. The liability they add to the bowling in the majority of the Test match, and even at majority of venues does not make up for their usefulness late in the match and in a minority of venues. Obviously, if I had to pick a Warne/Murali vs. a simply good fast bowler, I'd pick the spinner. But the choice is between Warne/Murali and some of the greatest fast bowlers the world has ever seen, so I'd have to go with them. They tend to be useful in more places, at all times in a match, in a more consistant manner. They also tend to be harder to dominate - as shown by McGrath and Marshall against the best batsmen of the era, vs. Warne and Murali vs the best batsmen of their era.

Lillee and Chappell miss out as I'm only considering performances post 79.

EDIT: Forgot about Imran, and Gavaskar deserves a spot ahead of Greenidge
Lots of you have opted to post teams for the period since you started seriously watching the game, rather than when you were born. For me that means: 1987 and:

Hayden
Slater
Ponting
Tendulkar
Lara
Waugh
Gilchrist
Warne
Marshall
Ambrose
McGrath

Not a huge change - Lara and Waugh come in for Richards and Imran, Slater (or really, anyone of half a dozen others) comes in for Sunil.
