Simon Katich

So, how do people reckon he'll go?

He's had a couple of scarifying experiences in previous outings in England, and has managed 3 decent scores, but no centuries in 11 innings there - all in the middle order, not opening. His test record ain't that impressive.

On the other hand, his record for his county teams is extensive, and ranges from solid to impressive, so it's probably unfair to suggest he has a problem with the conditions themselves, although no doubt the English attack would be better than the attacks he'd have faced playing for Derbyshire.

Katich had four bad Tests in 2005 (even in one of them he played one decent innings) against some bowling that'd confound most every batsman. Only Justin Langer even looked remotely comfortable on a regular basis in that series.

Nothing more than that. There's absolutely no precedent that can be drawn from 2005.

And obviously in 2001 he batted once and made 15 before getting an absolute pearler from Gough. Which clearly shows absolutely nothing whatsoever.

Fair bit to prove for Simon Katich this Ashes contest. In 2005 he was relatively secure in his middle-order position. Was very much a rash decision by selectors to discard of Katich back then. Had to break domestic run-scoring records to force his way back.

Katich will still be burning from what occured in '05'. May go on to have a big series against a much more docile bowling attack.

Nah, he was in shocking form when he was dropped. He literally couldn't score a run in Australia. Plus, Hodge did a pretty good job in his place. Hussey and Clarke later did, too (and even Symonds for a little while).

I think he'll do quite a bit better this time; he's had some excellent series, including two against SA. England don't have a bowler in Steyn's class and Katich has played him quite well. This English attack is also a shadow of that which appeared in 2005.

Reckon he'll have a good series, but'll probs get overshadowed by his opening partner.

Reckon he'll struggle, finishing off with the worst average out of the top 7 Australians.

He'll ton up in the first dig IMO.
Both correct.

His average of 87 will be lower than Hughes (234), Ponting (90), Clarke (123), Hussey (400), North (99) and Haddin (88). Unfortunately none of the tail will average anything as the only one to get a bat will be Johnson in his first innings who will end on 200* when Australia declare for a record score of 6/2134 declared (155 overs). This record will be broken twice more later in the series.

*On each occasion by Australia, it should be noted.

Was he really that secure?

I know averages can't tell you everything, but iirc Katich's career average during that series was never on the right side of 40.

Katich was twice dropped from the team but both times it was sheer diabolical selection. Basically he performed well between the series against India in 2003/04 and the First Test of 2005. He was left-out for Symonds in Sri Lanka in 2003/04 (fortunately that backfired completely and the absurdity of the decision was put into full view when it was reversed, successfully, after two games) and was also dropped for a combination of Lehmann and Clarke in 2004/05 - there was a case to not play either of those two, but no real case to not play Katich.

So he wasn't, in essence, secure, but as I say between 2003/04 and Lord's, when he was playing, he performed well if not exceptionally.

And I still feel that, just like Martyn, he was unfairly scapegoated for his failures in those last four Tests. Both Martyn and he should have been given the whole West Indies home series for my money, and if they'd produced nothing by the end of that, then fair enough to drop both. That Super Test nonsense didn't help the cases of either either.

Being way too appreciative of Gough's delivery. I still find it hard to have any respect at all for Katich because of that delivery. Getting a stump cartwheeled, on debut, by raising your bat above your head. IMO was lucky to ever get another game after that. Doin alright now though.

cheers
