Indeed. Can't really agree TBH. I'd rather have the first reserve Test batsman contracted than a Twenty20 specialist.

Even that doesn't justify Jaques being dropped. From what I heard from the head selector, the guy that likes hook, can't remember his name. It looks like the contracts/rankings are based on over rating in all forms. So players like Jaques, Warner and Tait who aren't really consider in all three forms would struggle to get contracts under that system. Whereas as guys like Manou, Hodge, White or Dussey who are close in all three are more likely to get contracts. Basically the best 25 cricketers overall in Australia, not the 25 most likely to play Internationals.
Does seem a tad strange. But the way overall payments are given, it is based heavierly on match payments. So in theory if Crazy got back into the Test side and jumped ahead of Hauritz in ODIs and T20, then he could earn more from match payments/short term contract, then Hauritz from his base rate. So it all a bit superficial in the end if you don't play games anyway.
What his average run saved in outfield in List A/Twenty20 matches. Pretty much put down as Test/FC specialist cus he doesn't field like Symonds.Even that doesn't justify Jaques being dropped.
He has a test match average over 45 in a short number of tests.
He has a first class average over 50 and over 11k runs to his name.
He has a List A average of over 42 at a strike rate of 90 and over 4000 runs to his name.
The only thing he shouldn't be in line for is T20 cricket. Heck, as soon as he's fit I'd like to see him in the ODI side ahead of Marsh and Watson (as an opener).
[McDonald & White obvious garbage. Jaques & Tait (regardless of injury woes) are definately on of the top 25 players.
Interesting position oh Hauritz, agree that he deserves a contract given he will be the main ODI spinner for a while yet. But given his test credentials aren't as safe i worry this means he will get selected in the Ashes squad which im 100% againts.
Thank god, Hodge is in also... /QUOTE]
I would hardly call McDonald rubbish, he is a quality all-rounder.
WOW - the kid Hughes snatched it from poor Jacques!
Um, don't think we really have 4 test quality strike bowlers. Unless 'strike' means 'unable to bowl a tight spell'. To quickly update you on current events re Clark and Lee, it's not 07/08 anymore.Macdonald is awful, shocked at his selection, if he has been picked for a containment/work horse role, his batting isn't good enough IMO. Australia would be better off going with 4 out and out strike bowlers (sort of) e.g. Johnson, Clark (tait would be nice but unlikely and unreliable), Lee, Siddle. Use Michael Clarke and Simon Katich's spin a lot more for filler.
lol @ Tait, considering he was almost going to call it quits not too long ago, this is some pretty dire man management by CA. Jaques is incredibly unlucky, never really did anything wrong his whole career, then just got injured at the wrong time (one of the few injuries he's ever had I believe). Poor form by CA dropping him from the contract list, especially when the likes of White and Macdonald are on there, or even Hodge (a more apt comparison).Tait would be fairly fairly pissed off at the moment.
In April, he was told by Cricket Australia that he had to stand down from IPL because they did not think he was fit enough to play - they have the right to do this as he was contracted at the time.
One month later, they dump him from the contract list.
Anyway, I think Jaques's ommission is harsh, as CA have stuck by other injury prone players in the past such as Tait and Watson.
My CA spies and various other operatives tell me that the squad will be picked next Wednesday, and therefore likely announced on Thursday. They further tell me that it will be a squad of 15.When is the Ashes squad announced OOI?
Yeah, think you're right. I reckon they're going for him as purely the Hodge-type; proven, older player who can jump in while the other long-term candidates develop. TBH, if they're any good at all, that Wade and Hartley were even in contention should be enough to give them incentive, even though they missed out.The thing is, Manou's only one year younger than Haddin. The gap between Gilchrist and Haddin is six years, and the gap between Healy and Gilchrist is eight years, so I do think this is quite a different situation.
I expected them to pick someone who could potentially take over from Haddin when he retired - not that I think that's right, but that's what I was expecting. Manou is going to retire at about the same time as Haddin.. it's not like he's heir to the throne like Haddin and Gilchrist before him quite obviously were.
Pleased they've gone with the next best candidate irrespective of age though, TBH.
For now, he's not even on the radar anyway. Tendonitis isn't an injury which clears up so until he makes himself available for selection in the SA Shield team (for which he missed over the half the season last year), a Test spot isn't something he's even aiming for.Tait's chances of ever making it as a Test cricketer are diminishing quickly. Since his brief retirement he has never really got his body or mind back to his best. The depth in Australian bowling stocks means unless he has a big season next year I think his time has passed.
Both Katich and Clarke are on record as saying they don't bowl much to avoid injury and frankly that's smart. Considering how valuable they are with the bat, anything which gets in the way of that (i.e bowling) has to go. The idea that Clarke and Kat can fill in for overs really should be let go, it ain't going to happen when both the players themselves have said they don't want to do it.Macdonald is awful, shocked at his selection, if he has been picked for a containment/work horse role, his batting isn't good enough IMO. Australia would be better off going with 4 out and out strike bowlers (sort of) e.g. Johnson, Clark (tait would be nice but unlikely and unreliable), Lee, Siddle. Use Michael Clarke and Simon Katich's spin a lot more for filler.
Depends on his ambitions. If he wants to play Tests, he'll have to play FC cricket for SA first. I would hazard this is a crucial off-season for him. If his injury shows no sign of healing, he'd probably look at losing his contract as blessing in disguise because it'd free him up to play IPL from now on. EZ money.Tait would be fairly fairly pissed off at the moment.
