Can't help but read my own reviews. Personally thought it was 4 and a half star moderating, but them's the breaks.

I have to admit, I'm very uncomfortable with banning of posters....

I'm just wondering if, before the ban took place, if a mod or admin tried to talk to sammy first, by PM or email, before effecting such a ban.

A few of his posts did certainly go over the top, but there were instances where he was provoked....
What you want, Natalie?

There are times when it's a bit of a shame, but most of the time it's neccessary. The vast majority of banned posters contribute nothing worthwhile.

And sammy2 was one of the ultimate examples. A completely and totally useless poster - all he did was post about how every West Indian player in history was better than every player from other countries. I'm quite baffled how you can think he had anything constructive to contribute.

Can't we have a temp freeze on new accounts. Or maybe something like anyone trying to create a/c from a Proxy should be allowed to go through admin approval.

This isn't a rhetorical question, but is there any reason why someone who wasn't a dupe would sign in via proxy?

Been working at a place for the last month where they've put in a filter so that all sites with the word 'cricket' in them are blocked. Anyone signing up from there would need to go through a proxy.

BARNES OUT
You mask behind another IP, so you're connecting from a "different" IP to the banned one. It doesn't work like Corrin thinks, there's no real way to tell if someone's using a proxy or just their normal IP AFAIK.

I would like to understand this so please bear with me - I have a "main" PC at home which is where I originally signed up from. Sometimes I also access CW from my office PC and from an old PC at home.

So do the mods have the means of knowing that fredfertang uses those three different IP addresses and that therefore if bertiefertang signs up from one thats almost certainly going to be a duplicate account?

Which of course doesn't help if bertie signs up from an internet cafe - although when he goes in from one of my PC's presumably that gives the game away?

So if someone were so minded and acquired a new computer or had regular access to a different one and created a duplicate on that and never used the duplicate on the computer they created their first account on how can the mods spot that?

.................. mind you I do struggle with the reason why anyone would want to bother with a duplicate - they must surely lead very sad and boring lives?

IP addresses are based on your internet connection; not your computer. Two computers in the same house accessing the same wireless connection from the same router will have the same IP, for example.

So unless they actually had two separate internet accounts for their two computers, it'd still show up as a dup.

Thanks - I think I see - so when, like now, I am at work, I am on a different IP address to normal is that what's called using proxy or is that something different?

True story- but when susudear's location says "Otago" and his IP sources to Zambia, it's fairly obvious.

Nah, that's not using a proxy - that's just accessing CricketWeb from a different IP. You don't actually directly access CW when you do use a proxy - you access the proxy and the proxy accesses CW for you.

Here's an example:

Cricket Web Forums via 'hidemyass'

The only way to stop this from happening is banning the IPs of all known proxies. This would be all well and good if there weren't about 500,000 free proxies available online, some with IPs that change regularly.
