Anything above Under 16s level is "senior rugby league". It's the same qualification that's used for State of Origin eligibility.

Newcastle isn't regarded as city as its local competition is governed by the CRL. I know a fair few people from Newcastle (well, mainly on rugby league forums, but still) and they're generally more pumped for this game than most. They have no trouble identifying with Country, mainly because they think of it as an opportunity to prove their superiority over big-brother Sydney.

Canberra is actually counted as part of country, see Joel Monaghan for example, Tuggeranong junior and played here all his junior life but hes country. Its practically metro sydney vs everyone else. Even Wollongong is counted as country, see Ben Creagh for example.

Country to beat City by 1, Mullen to dominate and win the NSW halfback role.

& yeah, I suspect I'd be up for it too, were I a Novocastrian. Obviously it's just semantics really, but with "City" really being "Sydney" (plus Canberra) the implication is that Sydney is the city.

More broadly I think any derby rivallry seems to matter more to (or who's seen as) the junior partner. SOO always seems just ever so slightly more important to QLD, although after losing three on the bounce I imagine you blokes are quite keen to win this year too.

The CRL actually don't govern Canberra's competition so I'm not sure where they should officially lie, but you're right about Monaghan.

Canberra is country. It basically Sydney Metro plus Gosford verus the rest. It not really based on if they play in CRL. It more based on whether they played in a metro league or not.

It is stupid really. I mean, how are some players meant to be enthusiastic about playing for Country while in some cases they have never lived in the country, just smaller "cities".

And Brumby about the Origin and it's importance to people, it's almost the Queenslanders are just a lot more out there, being bogans, etc, while out New South Wales- men just keep quiet.

Here's hoping the City-Country game is one of the hardest games of Rugby League ever and all players except those in the halves get seriously injured and I'm really hoping Wallace puts in a shocker.

All players from Canberra have always played for Country such as Brad Clyde, Ricky Stuart etc... But yeh Canberra and its surrounds is a seperate competition from NSW, like it doesnt come under "group 10 or group 20" but it definitely doesn't fit the NSWRL's city area so Country it is.

Looks like the last roll of the dice for the Sharks. Gotta wonder what kind of white knight would pour money into an entity with that much debt and such huge business problems (weak fan base, poor playing roster). There's talk of other options but you'd think they're just delaying the inevitable.

Reckon this will be the last year (or 2) for the Sharks in Cronulla. They'll take the NRLs relocation money and get out of the Shire imo. Where to is the question.

What would be smarter would be whoever buys the Sharks should relocate the team to the central coast, call them the bears if you want etc... Gets around building a club, buying a whole new team, plus if its a developer/businessman or whatever they would then own all that prime real estate in the shire.

We already given one crappy club a spot back. No new give the worst club of all time back. They been trying to get back in for 10 years and never had a business plan that wasn't pathetic. They would fold in five seconds as well.

Always had a soft spot for the Bears tbh. No idea why.
