The idea behind the 4 international players limit says to me, "Come for your favourite players, stay for the team". However, it is undeniable that coverage of the IPL in generic news media is still focused on the big names. Of what interest is the success of an Indian domestic player to an Australian paper? If a player from the country I support is doing well in the IPL, I begin to wonder, "why can't we have these players playing in our own premier league?". Excluding issues of finance, of course.
I think I can appreciate a good game regardless of who's playing or who's winning. I could arbitrarily choose a team to support even if I have no cultural or geographical link to whatever region they represent, and have done that in the past. But for that to happen it takes time. It also helps if they each develop a discernible personality to help choose (ie. the hard-luck team, the rich team everyone hates, the out-and-out aggressive team, the team with cunning, etc.). I'm not sure if this is possible with 20/20. So far in IPL2, all I know is that no one seems to like KKR.
The IPL looks to be a very successful product in India, which it should be. Outside of India though, I think there needs to be more leagues to generate local interest. Then we might get into the idea of transfers across leagues, as well as between teams.
