Good debut so far for Parnell. Following up his 4 wickets in the first innings with a maiden first class 50, has comfortably the highest score of the innings and could conceivably help Kent avoid the follow-on. Just listening to the BBC commentary and he has been particularly brutal on Kaneria. Don’t think he will be batting at 8 again…
Excellent stuff.

Can't believe how average the Kent side is at the moment, it's fairly depressing. I mean, why on earth is Hockley back? Do we think that after several years out of FC cricket he's going to come back and be anything other than the distinctly mediocre player he was before?

I was surprised to hear it I have to say. But, tbf, he's done OK since he's been back - not sure why he's batting at 7 though - it's early days, but he's doing better than Denly. I'm all for players getting a second chance if their attitude is right - Hockley's only just 30, so if all goes well Kent could get a good five years or so out of him. Ian Ward was released by Surrey in 1992 and came back in '96 IIRC, and went on to play for England. Better a 30-year-old local player than another Kolpak anyway.

Seems a bit of a freak injury. He does play a lot of golf and that isn't great for your knees at all.
I'm sure he's had setbacks on his knee before playing football though. Or was that Simon Jones, I can't remember actually?

Kieswetter looking awesome here. Seemingly in really good form this season, and it's not just a matter of the flat pitch, as he's actually looking really assured and good at the crease in this innings. Some of his drives are glorious to watch. His FC record isn't great atm, but his List A record is very decent, averaging 38 with 2 hundreds and a strike rate of almost 88, could be a potential England selection once he's qualified!

He kept fairly ordinarily though, to say the least.

So you're probably right, he'll be in the England side as soon as he's qualified.....

Hundred for Kieswetter. Been a beautiful innings really. Under pressure to save a game and he's come out with the confidence to play his natural game and played superbly.

Onions stoking up the pace as well, quite a few balls hitting over 87mph with him really following through. Don't understand why he's got the angled run though, and he seems to sort of jump into the crease a little before delivery, could probably be rapid if he sorted that out!

Yeah, that's all fair and true enough. Good to see the boys putting up a fight now but Denly and Key have both had a sticky start to the season.

Prior ends any hope of Hampshire forcing a result, not a bad start to the season though, weakish looking batting lineup has done pretty well so far but outside first game have lacked a bit with the ball after making early breakthroughs, Tahir should adress this problem when he is fit

Good to see Moeen Ali make his maiden first class century, was terrific a few weeks ago at the Rose bowl and hope this can be a big year for him.

Wonder if van Jaarsveld will declare (that after following on), or will Kent just be happy with a draw?

I imagine that he'll look to make the game safe before declaring. One of those games where the best chance of a result is Kent getting bowled out before lunch - could easily happen. To be honest though, even with Parnell in the ranks, I don't fancy our chances of taking ten wickets today, so I'd settle for the draw.

When does va jarrseveldt qualify for england, then pick him.
Not sure he is eligible for residency. Plays nigh on a full domestic programme in South Africa, family still resides there (had to fly home last county season as his wife gave birth…) and the fact that he is 35 next month, means that the chances of him playing for England are extremely slim.

Amjad Khan, Eoin Morgan, Ed Joyce et cetera is one thing but England hasn’t yet resorted to selecting former international cast-offs (Law, Mushy, Saqlain, Pothas...).

Listening to the commentary first innings and Kent were rather unlucky. Walker was dropped on 0 and Parnell had about 5 good lbw decisions against him turned down. Whilst Foster would have been run-out for next to nothing if there was a 3rd umpire but instead got the benefit.

290 odd, 4th day wicket, 70 odd overs to chase it, should be a challenge for Essex. Kent want promotion and they are not going to get it through draws or thinking once McLaren and Khan comeback we will be competitive, as those two things might not happen (anytime soon).

Yeah, do we think this is a decision based on their age/capabilities or there is an informal ECB policy not to select the re-treads?

I think it is policy - especially with Pothas given how many wicket-keepers England has gone through in the past few years and the fact that their keeper for the WC was the veteran, Paul Nixon.
