Dunno if it's been mentioned before, but Andrew 'AJ' Harris, opening the bowling for his new county Leicestershire against Middlesex today with Ian O'Brien, is the first player to represent five counties in first-class cricket.

IIRC archtypal journeyman Jason de la Pena played for four while only playing about 20 matches in total.

Marcus North has played for Durham, Lancashire, Derbyshire, Gloucestershire and Hampshire, beats him by 1 week

Nigh on run a ball ton for Captain Strauss. Hughes set for another 100.

And what is the point of Leicestershire? Promised to play more Englishman this year but that meant their best bowler, who holds a British passport had to be dropped.

They're bowling 'attack' is a 35 yo journeyman, a 33 year old who hasn't played FC cricket for donkeys years, a Derbyshire reject and a Kiwi. They are playing a couple of promising batsmen though.

Yeah O'Brien and then day light appears to be their attack. Soooo dire.

Which once again raises the question about why these counties exist as first class entities. Strauss & Hughes might as well be playing beach cricket.

Elsewhere, Joe Sayers' mini-marathon has come to an end.

Glad Durham are away, would be a nailed on draw if they weren't.

Interesting decision from Somerset to bowl first.

Think he spent 45 minutes on 49.

Watching the last few overs at Taunton...looks a flatty, gentle swing at the moment but batting looks just about as comfortable as can be. Guess it must have moved about a bit more earlier though its pretty clear overhead now. Suppose Durham's bowlers should get a bit more out of it that Somerset's would have been good to see Davies have a bowl but not to be

Would be nice if more than one of the batsmen could have gone on to get a century and bat the plodders out of the match.

Really nice to see Phil Hughes becoming suitably accustomed to English conditions, should be no lack of confidence there when we get underway in Cardiff. Or is it an England masterstroke, we would generally have known very little about Hughes, apart from seeing him in action in the series in South Africa, but now under the very watchful eye of skipper Andrew Strauss, who batted with him for a long time today, he must have a much better idea of Hughes' strengths and weaknesses. Never doubted the ECB's school of thought!

Handy little partnerships throughout the Gloucester innings means that honours were probably even on the opening day with Northants, after a maiden first-class half century from Ian Saxelby at number 9 frustrated the home side. Good effort from Dave Wigley, 4-68, but nothing from Monty to strengthen his shouts for an international call, as yet.

Decent effort from Durham on what seems a typical Taunton road, with a mediocre attack for Somerset. 500ish must be the target with Mustard to come, and then I expect Durham to create one or two more opportunities with their attack. Can they force a win ? Umlikely if Trescothick, Langer, Hildreth, etc bat anything like. Inserting Durham seems an unusual ploy.

Jaques Rudolph and Joe Sayers got Yorks off to a steady, if unspectacular, start. But all eyes tomorrow will be on Michael Vaughan, no question.
