Kumble was superb. Too bad Punjab knew they could see him off and still be able to chase the target.

That's dreadful in a T20. You shouldn't be able to see a bowler off and still successfully chase 169 to win.

Yea, there was a theory floating around here regarding part timers in T20. It's bollocks. You need good specialists bowlers.

Funny how it's the Englishman with no OTT hype surrounding him who actually delivers.
Think there's quite a lot of hype around Bopara actually within cricket, not sure about OTT though I guess. Have heard a few commentators/players saying he's a great batsman in the making.

I rate Ravi Bopara incredibly highly. He's got a superb record in both forms of the game in the last 2 seasons, well, last 2 seasons of FC cricket and last season of List A cricket anyway. Averaging 56 and 60 in his last 2 FC seasons, plus a brilliant year in OD cricket last year, he's going to be a star. He also seems to have the right temperament to succeed at Test level. Certainly doesn't seem to be the typical English county performer but International bottler.

All the hype on the IPL here is "See how Freddie and KP get on in the IPL!!!" "Freddie set to take on KP!!!" "KP scored 8 runs!!!"

Barely seen Bopara's presence mentioned at all.

I'm not sure if that's because people want Fred and KP to do well, or whether it's that they want them to be rubbish.

Yeah, definitely agree with that about the temperament.

It is because of the money at which KP and Flintoff were bought. There has been a lot of hype surrounding them where the IPL is concerned.

Bopara is an allround better option than Shah who consistently flops (Mark Ramprakash mk.II).

I was impressed with him today (even though I'm supporting Bangalore).

I agree he isn't at test match level yet, but I'd rather see a young player get a run than a bunch of consistent disapointments such as Bell, Shah and Key. I would rather Hildreth be above them in the pecking order too.

What's Virat Kohli ment to be like, and I don't mean as a batsmen I mean as a person. He looks like a real smug, arrogant looking dude lol. And who does he think he is with that tattoo.
What's the tatoo?
I just saw one on the under side of his forearm.
So what do you have against tatoos - if you don't even know what it is? It could be the name of a deceased relative for all you know. Or it could be 'I'm better than Bradman'. Do you have something with tatoos in general?

As I'm sure I've mentioned somewhere, I'm sure Cricinfo had an article on this subject a couple of months or so back.

Jayasuriya was definitely one of the names mentioned - his ODI bowling record is perfectly respectable for a part timer, yet his T20 record, particularly his economy rate, is shocking.

There are no dead middle overs like there are in ODI, where both sides are OK with defending. I love it that in Test cricket, one of the two sides is usually on the attack.

Yep.

In fact, James Hopes is probably the perfect example of a good ODI/List A bowler who's a terrible T20 bowler.

Cricinfo - Players and Officials - James Hopes

Scenario A:

You're an opening batsmen vs Australia in the 2nd match of a 5 match ODI series in which you're 1-0 down. Nathan Bracken and Mitchell Johnson have caused problems with the new ball, and Brett Lee and Shaun Tait have troubled your batsmen with their express pace. You've grafted your way to 20 off 30 balls, but after 15 overs your side is 40/3. Ponting throws the ball to James Hopes. Your partner at the crease has faced 4 balls and is yet to get off the mark. How do you play Hopes?

He bowls a decent line and length at decent, though not troublesome pace, and is hard to score runs off. You could charge down the track to him and try and belt him out the ground, but should you make a mistake, you're not likely to be too popular in the dressing room. Rebuilding the innings is your main priority, so Hopes is likely to bowl his overs for figures of 1/35 or so - great figures for a part time bowler.

Scenario B:

You're in the IPL, facing a side with Flintoff, Steyn and Bracken as the quick options, who have caused trouble. Vettori and Ojha are the main spin options the opposition captain has at his disposal. You're 8 overs in and again are 40/3. Hopes is brought on to bowl. How do you play him?

This time it's much different. Hopes is by far the weakest bowler the opposition captain has at his disposal. You only have 12 more overs in which to set a competitive total for your bowlers to bowl at, so you must score as many runs as possible off the weakest bowlers. Unlike Vettori for example, Hopes doesn't particularly have a lot in his locker - attempting to belt Hopes out the ground is a much better bet in this scenario.
