We're not talking about domestic FC league though. We're talking about T20, which has been doing well in England, South Africa, etc. So I don't think that the usual mantra of 'domestic doesn't appeal' necessarily applies to T20.
Does it do that well? Probably a lot better than other forms but enough to warrant such money being thrown around for something that could be a massive flop? ESPN paying a billion dollars for the rights makes no sense to me.

Well, the Indian ratings for the first season more than met their expectations. In fact, an IPL match got twice as many viewers as a India-Australia Test. :(

The question of course is how much that viewership would increase/decrease with more/less non-superstar international players.

I mean for the Champions League.

Btw has a spinner ever been used in a bowl-off before?

Ah.

I know there was a bowl off in T20 between India and Pakistan in the T20 World Cup. I don't remember another instance of it. India used Sehwag, Harbhajan, and Uthappa (bowling spin). Pakistan used Arafat, Ugal and Tanvir. India made all three, Pakistan missed all three.

But after the game, it was revealed that India had practiced a bowl off the day before and decided who they'd use, while Pakistan never practiced it and had to decide on the fly.

While it may sound a lot, in reality it is not really huge considering the fact that 1 billion is a 10 year deal which mean 100 million per year. Even if IPL didn't succeed, it is fairly easy to recover the cost in a huge market like India. And when you include the market outside of it it really sounds like a very small amount.

10 year deal seems even more silly, personally, considoring the thing could be a massive flop and axed after the first game. Obviously I don't know any of the details, but sitting here behind the computer screen it does feel like a bit of a bubble that could burst pretty badly.

From what i read last year Sony made more advertising money than it could've ever dreamt of during the IPL.

The international rights/ratings are an irrelevance to them really. Cricket on night in night out in India will sell period. That's the driver for everything, Indian audiences loved it and I don't think anyone would've guessed otherwise in India, especially after the WC win.

Play starting soon according to cricinfo.

Heh @ VRV's fielding. The more things change....

6 over innings is taking the mick a bit though.

Vettori vs. Gayle, failed badly.

EDIT: Wasn't a bowl off, was that super-over ****. But Dan would've been there against the Windies during Cairns' last game.

How could Punjab expect to win the game? Farce. Should have been called a draw and the next game should have started.
