Clearly new here. Have been watching this tournament with interest.:)

Is it possible for Afghanistan to gain ODI status then?
Looking at the table, I would say that if the Afghans beat Namibia then it is almost certain they will get in the top 6 (can you gain NRR when you lose?)

According to cricinfo, Scotland play UAE - and so (as long as Afghan > Namib) if Scotland lose Afghans will beat them by games won and if UAE lose Afghans will beat them based on NRR (UAE already have -0.8 comapred to Afghan's -0.5).

It's probably still possible that Afghanistan get into the semis even, if two of UAE, Kenya and Netherlands lose and the margins are favourable they might sneak in. Pretty unlikely though.

Am I the only one that thinks too much rests on the results of one tournament?

OD cricket for 4 years is a lot for the results of a couple of weeks work.

This type of high reward, short event led to USA being in the Champions Trophy and Bermuda having OD status.

This post is partially due to the prospect of Scotland losing OD status. It seems like that would be a disaster and a blow for Associates trying to move Pro. You cant plan longterm.

BTW, amazing results for Afghanistan and Namibia today.

Yes. Just one of those things. UAE can't get to more than roughly -0.7 though.

Full table

Code:
Ireland 6 5 1 0 0 10 +0.860 1226/245.5 1238/300.0
Canada 6 4 2 0 0 8 +0.855 1438/283.0 1151/272.2
Kenya 6 3 3 0 0 6 +0.006 1072/262.2 1146/280.5
Netherlands 6 3 3 0 0 6 -0.019 1395/289.5 1419/293.4
U.A.E. 6 3 3 0 0 6 -0.813 1168/277.5 1204/240.0
Namibia 6 2 4 0 0 4 -0.022 1428/300.0 1397/292.1
Afghanistan 6 2 4 0 0 4 -0.316 1392/300.0 1448/292.1
Scotland 6 2 4 0 0 4 -0.576 1210/300.0 1326/287.4
Basically, Afghanistan need to win about 80-85 runs against Namibia (less if Kenya or Netherlands suffer defeat by more than a few runs), and hope that two of Kenya, Netherlands and UAE lose. As said above, pretty unlikely, but likelier than it was this morning.

The loser of Namibia vs Afghanistan and UAE vs Scotland won't get ODI status, anyway. And if Kenya or Netherlands win on Friday they're through to the World Cup. Anything apart from that and the calculators need to be brought out.

as i am to tired to find this out myself...

in which scenario's do the dutch go to the WC?
Dutch win by 130+ runs: Guaranteed. Will finish ahead of Canada, thus top four.
Dutch win: No problems unless UAE win by 210 runs and Kenya also win.
Dutch tie: Qualify if Kenya lose or UAE tie or lose.
Dutch loss: Qualify if
a) Kenya lose by more than NL, and Scotland win (by 120 runs or less)
b) Kenya lose by more than NL, UAE win, but Afghanistan wins by 70 runs or less.
c) if Kenya don't lose by more than NL, then both Afghanistan and Scotland must win by small margins.

I think that covers it.

Yea, maybe it should be the cumulative results of all games played within the last four years. On the other hand, perhaps if you're not strong enough to make the top six associates even with a dip in form, perhaps your ODI status should be revoked?

Afghanistan qualify for the World Cup if they win and UAE lose, and Netherlands or Kenya lose heavily.

So that's a long shout. But they'll get ODI status with a win in almost any situation.

You're somewhat contradicting yourself, particularly in the bolded bits.

Reading the discussion regarding the coaching staff, I have a point to make that I think shows the difference:

Under Roger Harper, almost every game produced a personal best for at least one player (i remember blogging about it at the time), sometimes several ==> The team showed constant improvement.
There have been a couple under Kirsten, but not nearly to the same extent and much less often.

That said, I don't think the coaches are where the real problem is - the domestic situation has to be changed to produce more matches between the top players and the development must be restarted if things are not going to get worse.

The real question is what has four years of ODI cricket done for teams like Scotland, Bermuda and Kenya and Holland to not improve. The problem is yeah you get four years, but effectively you only get regular matches for 12-18 months till the start of the World Cup. Then the rest of the matches are against each other and no different to List A matches the others play or just your average 50-over game. The status becomes redundant after the World Cup. Maybe the sides that get the next lot of ODI status will be able to use it better.

The only thing that ODI status gives you is money. It does little to help improve performances on the field, as they barely play games against the big teams. Or even against each other 12 months. And when they play they don't always have full strength sides.

Though really maybe the focus is wrong and we shouldn't be able to develop the next Test side. Just develop a 2nd tier of International cricket. Give then ODI status or List A status, it really becomes pointless in the end.

Well, if you've been following the tournament, you'll be aware that Scotland have been absolutely terrible. There's a lot of cricket in the tournament and even if they played another 20 matches I'd still be surprised if Scotland made the top four because they've been comprehensively worse than Canada, Netherlands, Kenya, Ireland and even UAE and Afghanistan. Their failings have nothing to do with the tournament structure and everything to do with the unspeakable direness of their batting.

It would be harsh on the superior sides if Scotland were to retain ODI status in their place.
