What the odds now on Manly for the spoon. Reckon we are a good bet, might splash ten on them. Play with some heart ****s, don't care if you lose at least put some effect in. It like watching Para from last season.

Amazing the run we had the last two seasons without injuries and suspensions. Though we have lacked a rough diamond this season.
No spoon for Manly. They haven't won it since they came in in 47 and they've had much worse sides than this one.

They need to get a wriggle on awfully quick though if they're going to contend. I don't think you can over-appreciate how much off-field stuff can impact teams on the field. The Stewart issue is one thing, but the Board is at each other's throats as well, and there's a blue on between the Football Manager and one of the co-owners.

I saw it with my team last year. After a fine 07 when they were within one game of the GF, Parra had an Underbelly-type pre-season then a bad start on the field. For the first 6-8 weeks everyone was saying "they'll come good, they'll come good" but they didn't.

Now IMO Manly 09 >>> Parra 08, so the potential is there. But all this is demonstrating is how much of any sport is played between your ears. If you aren't switched on, you will have your head handed to you. Simple as.

Off at a tangent, but are you any relation to Frank Burge at all?

Apologies if you've been asked before.

Last nights match between Manly and Penrith was the worst game of rugby league I have ever seen. Dont care that it was raining, just hold on to the ****ing ball someone.

Nah mate. Grandson of Ted who played some pre-WW2 games with Balmain. He was in the 1937(?) President's Cup winning side - still have his blazer at home :).

Ah, cool. How come you ended up an Eel then? :p
Tigers are still my second team. always will be.

Born and bred in Parramatta area. Probably really changed over in 1976 - I still remember watching the 76 GF. Whenever I went to Gosford Court I'd see Neville Glover - he was/ is a police prosecutor there. Never gave him anything like an even break in a case.

Never forgive things like dropping the ball with the line wide open, only to lose 13-10.

By the 80s even my grandfather was an Eels fan, though he still had a soft spot for the Tigers. Phil Gould played junior cricket at our club and my grandfather as founding President was very close to his family. When they had my grandfather's testimonial, Gus's dad gave a speech and recounted how he rang Ted after the 88 GF and said "Well done the boy, hey?" My grandfather said "Yeah, well done the boy".

Then there was a 30 second pause before my grandfather said "Listen mate, I was barracking for the Tiges".

You can take the boy out of Balmain, but not Balmain out of the boy.

I think it's also a very good indicator of how tough you are mentally. Many of these off field dramas only serve to fire up a team (Bulldogs 04 being a prime example). Says alot about Manly's mental fragility that they haven't been able to use it all as a positive motivator.

TBF Bulldogs also had little injuries in 04. Whereas Manly and Parramatta had a fair few injuries. With the salary cap there not many sides that can handle more then a couple injuries and still play at the levels they are expected.

Don't forget the NRL also criminally let Canterbury keep the 2002 squad together, and they went on to win it in 04.

NRL - The Peter Costello of sports admin - no balls.

Raiders late 08? Todd Carney issues, massive amounts of injuries. Still fired up and produced some killer performances (72-12 :(). Many a tip went down the gutter last year thinking they couldn't handle it and the bubble would burst soon.

And Burgey hear hear about the NRL.

FINALLY got the team I wanted to see out of ME. Lewis at lock. Sammut and Graham in the halves. Cooper back from suspension. The variables are the shorter turnaround and Benji, who's in ripping form.

Have a good feeling about this one though :)
