Interesting article on Cricinfo about England's ****eness in the middle overs.

Cricinfo - England's mid-overs slump, NZ's mid-order heroics

Find it hard to take much notice of someone who goes on about clearing the deadwood and decides to include Owais Shah. He's a mediocre batsman, he's rubbish in the field, is poor running between the wickets with his calling (which means other peoples' averages and strike rates suffer) and offers nothing with the ball.

You've just listed all Shah's good points, scaly. People will think you're going sort on him.

Lol at England.. Worst non Ban/Zim side in cricket?
Can't disagree, but less than a year ago didn't they bury someone from down your neck of the woods in ODIs?

What I'm saying is these things are transient. Give us a year and I'm sure we can get below Bangladesh.

But we just owned Australia in ODI's, does that make England better than Australia?
Course not, but if you don't conclude that they're the best after beating the current number one side 4-0 why would you conclude that they're the worst because they're 2-1 down with two to play against the West Indies?

Yeah, some dismal stuff going down, but nobody was saying South Africa were the worst side in the world when they were dismissed for a score about 30 runs below what we managed yesterday IIRC. There is a lot of work to do but whenever England have one dismal performance the reaction seems to be much more extreme than with any other side. We won the first ODI and, yeah, we were poor in the second and deserved to lose but it wasn't a world-ending ****show; yesterday was a disgrace, but it happens. We are a hugely inconsistent ODI side, and that's that.

Part of England's entertainment value is their unpredictability. You're never sure which England side is going to turn up - the appalling or the mediocre.

South Africa were actually winning other games in the months prior and it isn't one dismal England performance.

The first ODI was "won" in joke circumstances, talk about clutching at straws. Your statement there pretty much speaks for itself about how desperate it's got, nothing needs to be added to it.

I hate the notion that WI would have automatically won had they batted out the overs, watching the game at that point there only seemed to be one likely winner.

I'm not clutching at any straws, we're not a great ODI side but nor is there really a case to label us the undisputed worst

The relevance of South Africa winning previously is what, by the way? We won an ODI two games before this farce (and deservedly so), we had a nightmare against India and were awesome against South Africa - so it's not really all that long ago.

England were nothing special in the one day game when we last won the ashes - let's not abandon all hope just yet

General problem is we can't bat for toffee. Have one decent batsman who is currently having a tant. We are much closer to having an adequate bowling attack than we are an adequate batting line-up (Think Flintoff, Broad, Anderson, Swann & 1 other isn't too bad)

The 'other' is generally the problem though :(
Nowhere near the level of the problem with the batting though. Mascarenhas/Collingwood combo is adequate enough especially if someone chains Patel to a treadmill.

Flintoff needs to bat 7/8 these days.

Opener
Davies
KP
Trott
Patel
Collingwood
Flintoff
Mascarenhas
Swann
Broad
Anderson

Strauss is not an opener in ODI's, we desperately need one

Yeah, agree

TBF, there Pietersen, Collingwood & Flintoff are all good enough to form a decent middle order. But we have constantly failed with our opening pairs and powerplay batting. But I don't know where ODI openers are gonna come from
