Series Result: 1-1
Top SA Runscorer: Smith
Top Aus Runscorer: Ponting
Top SA Wicket-taker: Ntini
Top Aus Wicket-taker: Siddle
Player of the Series: Smith
Surprise Packet: Tahir if he plays. If not, Hughes.
Dropped Player(s): Harris
Miscellaneous Event: South Africa to drop at least three Aussies on their way to centuries.
Nothing but the surprise packet right here, but i was closer to getting the result than most. Here's the actual results for reference:

Series Result: 2-1 Australia
Top SA Runscorer: De Villiers with 357 from 5 innings.
Top Aus Runscorer: Hughes with 415 from 6 innings.
Top SA Wicket taker: Steyn with 16 wickets @ 29.
Top Aus Wicket taker: Johnson with 16 wickets @ 25.
Player of the series: Mitchell Johnson
Dropped player (s): McKenzie, Morkel, North (kinda)
Miscellaneous Event: Simon Katich to top the bowling averages with 5 wickets @ 10.

Surprise packages: Hughes and McGain.

My predictions:

Series Result: Draw 1-1 (that's what I expect, but of course I hope for 3-0 to SA)
Top SA Runscorer: Smith
Top Aus Runscorer: Ponting
Top SA Wicket-taker: Steyn
Top Aus Wicket-taker: Johnson
Player of the Series: Steyn
Surprise Package: Hughes
Dropped Player(s): Hauritz, Hilfenhaus, McKenzie
Miscellaneous Event: Ponting whines about the pitch, substitute fielders, or something or the other. Michael Clarke sledges/gets sledged/gets himself into some kinda ****. Smith's elbow acts up again, causing him to miss the last test.
Smith did miss the last test due to injury! Finger, not elbow, but still.

I'm getting chills, folks. Chills! Much closer than Uppercut's predictions. :p

A bit belated but I hope this is a lesson to all of you who ever questioned Ashwell Prince's ability:ranting:

Alright, I accept that North is marginally ahead of Duminy.

New question - team of the combined series (Aus + SA tours)

Smith
Katich
Ponting
Kallis
De Villiers
Duminy
Haddin
Johnson
Harris
Siddle
Steyn
Hmm, I'll have Hughes ahead of Katman despite him missing the first series. He was good enough to make up for it. Not much else that can be argued with there.

But Katman was in really good touch throughout both series. In 6 tests, he scored a century and five 50s. With his 5 wickets, it's tough to leave him out of the 'combined squad'.

I would have Hughes in over Graeme Smith.
In 2 less tests, Hughes scored 18 more runs - and was 2 centuries to 1 up over Smith.

If Smith wasn't injured, I'm sure he makes the 'best XI' for the combined series, but he was, so he doesn't.

Did anyone see the cricinfo ratings, how the hell did Mcgain get 2? What exactly did he do get himself 2 points??? Is 2 the lowest on the scale or something?

Hmm doesn't really do justice to when Smith scored his runs though. Second-innings hundred chasing 414 in the first test, all but saw them home in the second, came out to bat with a broken hand in the third.

Then he had a failure and a fifty in the first test at home, but at the start of the second he broke his hand and couldn't bat any more. Effectively, he didn't really get much of a go in the second series. But he got man of the series in Australia, and i think his captaincy was probably better than Ponting's, so i'm going with him.

One for landing the ball on the cut portion, one for turning up to the ground on time.

Not a very good prediction by myself, although I did get the Johnson with the bat and McKenzie getting dropped.

Oh right - so Hughes 75 in his second test innings, with Australian top order wickets crumbling all around him, wasn't any good? I thought that innings put the game beyond South Africas reach altogether, and gave the Aussies the impetus to attack to the finish.

And his twin test hundreds in only his second test - when being specifically targetted by Dale Steyn and co - cried out 'significance' as they took the series, and a the world number 1 ranking, out of South Africas reach.

Effectively Hughes didn't really get a go in Australia - but he averaged 90 in the South Africa leg. It's quite irrelevant that Smith missed tests, because Hughes didn't get a chance (had Hughes played in the Australia tests and done half as well, then we wouldn't even be debating this - it'd be Hughes).

He scored more runs in LESS test matches.
Oh, and when they kept bouncing Hughes, they weren't able to break either his hand OR his finger.

Hughes.

Just comes down to what you value, Uppercut isn't wrong to pick Smith over Hughes.

His sweaty man-love for ABDeV is another matter entirely.
