I'm not saying McGain bowled well or anything like that, I saw the highlights and McGain for whatever reason (nerves probably) bowled nothing but pies, that I can't deny and nor will I try to (for all we know he might bowl a whole lot better today).

What I'm trying to say is that they have taken a punt on him at his age when they didn't need to so I think he is worthy of at least one more Test and in essence I agree with Goughy. Not rocket science in what I said wasn't it?
Nah i agree. One spell doesn't make him a bad bowler, however bad that spell was. But i can't really see him getting near the test side again after that.

Ahh. Nah as i said above i don't think one spell makes him a bad bowler.

Really was dire though.

How bad the spell was may actually help him. It was so bad that it was not realisitc and cant every be expected to be repeated.

So bad that it cant be factored into future performance.

I honestly think that 10 or so overs are not enough to destroy a career.

He's 37 though. Rightly or wrongly, it might well be his first and last test.
The strange thing about 37 is that you would have expected the physical decline to have already hapened. He wasnt playing Test cricket at 25 (so he wasnt playing at his peak) and I cant imagine he will decline between 37 and 39 (for example).

Nothing to stop an injury free spinner playing into his early 40s.

Especially as he hasn't played 20 years of FC cricket, so he's not physically worn out.

If McGain gets a trundle in the 2nd innings, I reckon he might just get a few wickets, as the Saffas eyes will light up and they may get themselves in a bit of trouble.

That said; he may not bowl in the second innings.

Michael Clarke > any other spinner Australia has right now.

Why waste the space? Put another player in, and let Clarke bowl all the spin. Can't be any worse than McGain, surely.
His back issues.

He probably doesn't like to bowl because of it, like Vaughan with his knee.

There might not even be a second innings. :p

How good is Katich as a spinner? Where does he rank in comparison to, say, Pup Clarke or Michael Bevan?

I've been impressed with everything except for his bowling.. He seems like such a decent oke, always signing autographs, playing the game with his head held high even during the worst of this onslaught.. I can relate to him because I had a tough time playing rep cricket as a young leggie, I got carted everywhere and my head dropped, I started swearing, kicking the turf, and turning the whole thing into a massive drama. Then I eventually gave up. I really regret that I didn't conduct myself like this guy.. I don't want him to turn into a success because he is playing against South Africa, but I hope he gets his chance against England and he gets some luck, because I think he really deserves some

Well he's a very reluctant bowler, he's made it obvious in the press over the last week or two he dosen't particularly enjoy bowling, never bowls himself for NSW and apparently rarely even has a trundle in the nets anymore these days because he reckons it wears him out.

But when he bowls regularly like he did back in 2003/04 then he's very capable...was taking wickets left, right and centre that season. Good control for a part-timer (much better than Bevan's ever was) and good with his googly. If he were to put in the hard yards and really get into some good bowling rythym then I reckon he could be very handy....like best spinner in Australia handy....but it won't happen because his spot is already secure based on his batting and he just can't be bothered.

I read something about not wanting to aggravate an ongoing niggly shoulder injury by bowling lots in the nets, too.
