Wtf, I'm following the cricket and hearing about some brilliant volley from Gerrard on the BBC text, turn over to the football hear the interviewer ask Gerrard whether it was in his top 5 goals.

Then they show it and I mean is that it?

God the hype for that guy is just unbelievable.

So Liverpool and Chelsea both through...reckon Manure will join them but can see the Arse dropping out.

Would be surprised if there isn't an all PL QF tbh to get rid of at least one of them. Would be funny if all 4 reached the semis though. IIRC last year the Premier League clubs only got knocked out by other PL teams

In other news, Gerrard scores twice as the team he captains beats Real Madrid by four goals to nil.....

BARNES OUT
Why can't they play like that in the prem :(
Well:

a) Madrid had conceded an away goal and needed to come to Anfield and play open football.
b) They had both Torres and Gerrard playing at the same time.
c) Madrid are **** in defence (they shouldn't be though, Pepe and Cannavaro isn't a bad combination, they just make the supidest mistakes) when most of the sides in the prem aren't.

Instantly?
Well of course not as soon as it opens lol. But England this milennium have been producing highly skilled players, but just not as abundant as major nations (especially the strikers). Just need Burton to really expand on the talent.

That's unbelievable - how did they justify that??
Dunno tbh.

I suppose in the pre-Prem era there wasn't such a concentration of talent in the top clubs; nowadays it would be inconceivable for England's first-choice left-back to spend his career at Notts Forest or for our 'keeper to turn out for Derby, but back then it was unremarkable.

Some were just selectorial shockers tho; Tony Adams was omitted & Alan Smith (top scorer in the top flight in 89 & again in 91) was overlooked for Steve Bull, who never even played a game in the top division.

TBF wasn't it Lineker and Beardsley up front in that WC? Smith should have been in the squad, mind, but wouldn't have had him in the XI. Though that's not what you're saying so I don't really know what my point is.

Think that's the "Dickinson default": arguing or disagreeing for the sheer bloody arse of it.

But yeah, I have to be honest, I doubt many of our team would've made the starting XI, but cases could def be made for a few to be in the squad (Winterburn ahead of Dorigo, Lukic ahead of Beasant, Rocastle for Trevor Steven, etc).

I remember seeing Bully at Elm Park on several occasions - he was absolutely awesome at that level - it sticks in the craw a bit to criticise someone for loyalty but if he'd gone to a top club and not stuck things out at Wolves for all those years he might have been hugely successful

He was so popular at Wolves. I remember in 93-94 he had been out injured for ages and then made his comeback in a reserve game. 12,000 fans turned up. We had a way better team than Wolves at the team and this was reflected by league position, yet we were getting 7/8,000 for most of our league games. It was crazy!

We were semi-finalists without any player from the evil George Graham Arse-empire. I think everyone was quite happy about it at the time:p

Dorigo had pace, which Winterburn and Pearce lacked. Meh, third-choice 'keeper. Trevor Steven was immense in '86 and was by know means past it. Tony Adams earnt his donkey tag for his performances in Euro88. Oh and even though you didn't mention him "if Lee Dixon can play for England, so can I".

Yeah Smith was probably unlucky, but I seem to remember Bull impressed in some freindlies before the tournament, which got him the nod.
