TBF to Matthew he hasn't really dropped any serious testicles since his recall. De Villiers looked decent enough in the one (or was it two?) test/s I saw him keep in, but that was back in 04/05. Wouldn't like to definitely say he's better, especially as he's probably not been working that hard on it.
Well if De Villiers had to step in and keep right now it'd be a toss-up. If they told him he was going to be their keeper for an extended period and that he had to keep working on it, though, I have absolutely no doubt he'd be a league ahead of Prior within a Test or two.

Played for the A team against Sri Lanka, didn't do much and he also has a terrible action. Been lucky so far not to a have a serious injury.
Oh okay cheers. Would like to see his action, just too much pressure on the back or does it just look ungainly?

Bit of both. It is worse then Andre Nel (similarly build/height to Andre just quicker) and at the point of delivery he does a Paul Adams and looks down at the ground. Pretty strange to watch especially when he bowls at the death for he still kinda of knows if the batsman is charging him despite being in no position to see if he actually is.

Doesn't matter how fast, surely he knows not to bowl short to ponting, or at least get it above eye level.
You can't bowl it full either, he's incredible on the front foot. Or wide, you'll get smashed through cover and point. Or on the pads, he's fantastic there too. It doesn't sound so simple now, does it...

Fair point. I wouldn't want to bowl to him at all either.

Enjoying this so much. Up there with one of my favourite Test matches.
From a patriotism angle yes, from watching true competition no. Saffers aren't giving a yelp. Also suggests that there's a big gap between #1 and #2 in the world.

put out a sweeper and give him 1 for a great shot. Worked in 05 against Australia, take away the 4's and you unsettle our game. ATM this is a walk in the park.

Haha, Cullinan still can't bring himself to give more than qualified praise for Hughes. GTFO. Seriously.

Goals to be achieved today:

1. Hughes 2nd test century
2. Ponting 38th test century
3. Ponting 11,000 test runs
4. Lead by 550

With the way ODIs have headed, players have become increasingly good at running between wickets. Besides, they already have two men out on the pull, and he's finding the boundary anyway.

England did for Ponting in 2005 with top-quality bowling. You can hypothesise on tactics to get out Ponting, but at the end of the day it's probably going to take world-class bowling to beat a world-class batsman.

Well Steyn bowling at 145+ just outside off with a bit of movement is exactly that, he did this in Australia. I presume he is injured as his pace has been well down whilst the rest of the bowlers from the previous series have kept pace, thus ruling out conditions. Back to my original point, bowling short mid height bouncers isn't going to work.

Lol, I have barely had the chance to watch a session of this test.

Have the SA commentators been as woeful as usual?

How have they been with Hughes? How have they managed not to praise him?

Blabbering on about his poor technique and discomfort against the shorter balls.

Quite.

And, for mine, Steyn looks fit. The other day, he was pure menace. Just think today he's been ****.

Speaking of Nel, whatever happened to him. He was quite decent in 05/06 when I saw him last.

Don't forget his apparent leg-side bias despite scoring over half his runs in the off-side.

Tell ya what, it's been rare a bloke has been so quickly identified as a danger to the opposition as Hughes has to the Saffies. He's hit them well but he's survived a really stern test too, plenty of chin music coming his way. Gutsy cricketer.

I just get the feeling what elevates him above the rest is that he never takes stuff for granted. Even in his technique he's always playing through the full arc of his shots all the way through his innings. Doesn't relax or slack off. Geez he looks good.
