International 12th Man
The only use Shastri could possibly have in any team is to render the opposition comatose.
There is atleast one person, Tilak Raj (who Shastri put away for six sixes in an over in a Ranji match), who will disagree with you. Though I suspect that there may be a few more.

(Actually Shastri was man of series in the 1985 ODI Champions trophy, so the committee that selected him there should stand up as well, since most of the ODI worthies of the day were in attendance in that particular tournament.).

Shastri was handy as an all-rounder with good cricketing sense, along with being a good fielder .... like someone said, he was the Champion of Champions in the ODI Championship in Australia. at times, he was slow but he had the ability to accelerate

with a cool head, he would be a good finisher esp with someone like Kapil, who could throw it away with a rash shot, batting above him and shot makers like Srinath and Zaheer to follow him. as a bowler, he would be useful as the 5th bowler. with 3 pacers in the squad, Shastri spin bowling would be useful and he can also bowl in conjunction with part-timers like Sehwag, Tendulkar, Yuvraj and Ganguly

I would hesitate to pick three spinners unless there just werent good pace/medium pace bowlers available or we were playing only on turning tracks. Thats why I replaced one of the pecialist spinners here with Amar Singh, by all accounts from England a fabulous bowler - besides being a more than useful lower order batsman anda brilliant fielder which both choices for specialist spinner arent.

I think it was Hammond who said that Amar Singh came off the wicket like the 'crack of doom' and Hutton was categorical in his belief that in 1970 "There is no better bowler in the world today than Amar Singh,''

This fence is comfortable so I figured I'd spend some time here. :)
BTW, I thought a long time before chosing Sehwag over Merchant. Partly to salute Sehwag for giving India its first and now its second triple century in Tests. I wouldn't have done it two years ago :)

Mr SJS, we've been looking forward to your assessment of Vijay Merchant :)
