Toby Brookes has catapalted himself inside the world's top fifty after becoming the first Australian to win an ATP International Series event following his
6-4, 7-5 victory over Ukraine's
Viktor Vuriak. After the pair pulled off sensational come-from-behind upsets in the semifinals, the Pörtschach crowd still turned out in droves to see the two underdogs do battle. In a somewhat uninteresting contest, the two traded bombs from the baseline for the most part, and it was there that Brookes got the better of Vuriak with a straight sets victory. Vuriak lacked the flair that helped him to victories against
Rasmus Olesen and
Danijel Micic, preferring to play defensive and somewhat hesitant tennis against the aggressive Brookes. Brookes proved all too good from the baseline for Vuriak, and despite the relatively close scoreline looked the better player for the most part as he romped to a maiden career title.

Trumper-Smith trumps Maxum to earn Roland Garros spot
Lawrence Trumper-Smith has earned the CWLand wildcard into the main draw of next week's French Open after an upset victory over
Jarko Maxum in the round robin final. In the best of five set final, Trumper-Smith looked the goods right from the word go as he looked to continue the great form from his semifinal. The controversial tennis figure looked to put a stop to some of the criticisms levelled at him by his critics as he raced through the opening two sets against one of the brightest hopes on clay. Maxum was unable to really impose himself on the match and suffered through a lack of initiative as Trumper-Smith earned his entry
6-2, 6-4, 6-3. Elsewhere, 16-year old Australian
Harry Thompson will no doubt be the youngest entrant at Roland Garros as he wrapped up a good week of tennis with a big win in his wildcard final against veteran
Glen Hunter. 29-year old Frenchman
Mikel Fosdike also earned a spot in the main draw after a victory over
Sébastien Lachance. The French Tennis Federation will later this week announce the recipients of the other six conditional wildcards. Five of those will go to local talent, whilst the last will be awarded to a foreign player whose ranking does not directly qualify them for the main draw.
