Irrespective of ability I can't see anyone having the opportunity to break Murali's record or Tendulkar's for that matter - their records will become like those of Hobbs and Rhodes

I'd have Vettori on that list actually - 286 wickets and just turned 30. Let me state unequivocally that he has no chance of actually overtaking Murali, but neither does pretty much anyone else on that list and he will at least get closer than a lot of them.

My personal answer to the question at hand - no one.

Lets see, Murali picked up his 300th in his 58th test, aged 28 years.
Warne did it in his 63rd test, aged 28 years.
Kumble did it in his 66th test, aged 31 years.
Harbhajan did it in his 72nd test, aged 28 years.

Harbhajan has played 8.1 tests a year since the 2001 series. So assuming he stays in the team and carries on with his current rate of 4.24 wickets a test and 8.1 tests per year, he'll be on 658 wickets if he retires at 38 like Kumble did. Won't make it to 800. Would be cool to have two Indian bowlers in the 600+ club, though.
I'd be surprised if Habhajan Singh managed more than about 450 Test wickets. He's not as good a bowler as Kumble is and pretty much certainly never will be.

Peter Siddle.

Nah, I picked someone who hasn't played yet.

I am interested though to see who gets the most wickets out of the 24 year old quicks.
Jerome Taylor 78 wickets
Umar Gul 70 wickets
Morne Morkel - 49 wickets
Peter Siddle - 17 wickets

Umar Gul easily the most skilfull of those bowlers for mine and if he gets a fair crack of the whip (ie, people don't continually refuse to play Pakistan and he doesn't get more of those horrific injuries he had early in his career) he should do better than Taylor, Morne Morkel or Siddle easily, though Siddle has looked pretty useful in his last couple of Tests, infinitely better than the joke selection who played in his first couple.

I'm backing Siddle. He looks the goods, genuine pace, can swing the ball. Gul probably wont get enough games (Pakistan's current state and all). However if Morkel continues bowling like he has occasionally in the past and has already today, I can see him taking a lot of wickets.

Murali has been quite open in admitting that, taking 1000 test wickets is his ultimate goal, well if he does that, then other bowlers can only dream of reaching that milestone, taking that many wickets isn't too easy a task, and a fast bowler definitely ain't gonna take that many wickets, so in the unlikely even the record is broken, it would most probably be done by a high-class spinner.

Murali won't take 1000. His shoulder has started to give away. Spin has lessned, snaking off breaks are far apart. He'll more and more rely on the old method of flight and variations of spin. Even at ripe age of 35, he's trying out a back spinner and a flipper these days. (Have seen him practicing something like that few months back in SL,). Don't know whether it will suceed or not, but 900 wickets would be a more realistic target for him.

Yeah, there is absolutely no way a quickie is going to overtake him. It'd require a high class spinner who starts off early at around 20 and plays for 18-20 years.

Yeah a paceman will never do it. I'd be surprised if a paceman ever takes McGrath, very few pacemen have an action so smooth and without massive impact.

You are joking, and Moobs taking 350 wickets let alone 700 ****ing wickets looks distant now. I might settle in Mars.

I certainly hope so.

Imran Qadir.

He is 15 and qadir reckons he is already better then he ever was but then there is a tendency for sub-continental parents to over estimate their kids:dry:

But from all reports that have gathered he is already being tipped as better any spinner in domestic spinner in the country, Aaqib Javaid reckons if Kaneria continues his crappy ways and if no new spinner comes through then he might be in at 17-18

Yeah, I agree he isn't as good as Kumble was, but he has the advantage of starting off earlier that Kumble did. Kumble has a better wickets/match ratio, but still only got his 300th wicket at 31 years of age compared to Harbhajan's 28 because of his late start. Sheer longevity could see Harbhajan cross 600.

Out of the people on the poll, I'd say that only Mendis has a realistic chance of doing it.

As people have said, it's pretty much certain that a fast bowler won't be the one to beat him.
