Ponting to Skip IPL

I'm not that surprised at Ponting making this decision in 2008/09 - the question is and always has been whether similar will be done in 2014/15 by equivalent players... if the IPL still exists at such a date.

How much money is he missing out on anyways? He'd only be playing a couple of matches.

Best for all parties really, he doesn't really fit in there and it's not like he's going to score truckloads anyways, plus he gets a break.

$200K apparently. He already earns a lot of course, but it's still a lot to turn your back on. Good on him.

Glad to see it, especially as he had complained about the workload previously. Always happy to see players put their money where their mouth is.

I don't see why should any Australian player who is the part of the international team for the Pakistan series should even think about playing in the IPL this season.

At best they would get to play in five games, given their franchise qualifies for the semis and the finals, otherwise they are only going to be available for three games, which hardly should be an incentive enough for them to give away a much needed two-week break they might get, before the T20 world cup and the Ashes.

Besides it is not always about money. He was there last year, maybe it didn't appeal to him as much at it sounded in the beginning.

TheAge said:
RUMOURS that Australian captain Ricky Ponting was privately shopped around to other Indian Premier League franchises — and that no buyers showed interest — have been denied by his Kolkata Knight Riders franchise.

But the source said Ponting had little choice but to pull out and that his future at the franchise is all but finished.

"They tried to trade him. No other team wanted him," said the source, who did not wish to be named.
Article here. Also has a bit on the supposed between him and Sourav. Not sure how much can be read of this "source" but the whole idea they tried to move him and he didn't like it doesn't sound too far fetched for mine

Roumors within the IPL are that KKR management were not too happy with Ponting's performance last year and wanted to trade him off, but none of the other teams wanted to take him so they were stuck with him and Ponting has not been too happy under Idiot Ganguly who did not take any suggestions from him during the matches, kept him waiting in the nets for his turn and sent him off to the boundary when he(Ganguly) was not happy with him in a particular match.

Edit: Hahah......more or less the same post as the above.

I think Ponting needed the rest more than the money, that thats all there is to it. Ganguly will most probably retire next year, and if Ponting is still around in 2011, he could figure prominently in KKR's plans for a leadership role.

Ponting could only play max of 5 games this season.

That translates to 200k divided by 15 multiplied by 5 coming to around 66.67k.

And the amount would get further reduced if KKR didnt make it to the last 4.

So makes no sense for either Ponting or KKR to carry on this season.

And Ponting sucked at last year's IPL, and is no guarantee nor value to be a first pick International.

Wise decision by KKR and Ponting.

No.

Because

1. Ponting is also getting older
2. Ponting might still be Aussie captain then. which means he will be touring.
