I heard yesterday that Ambrose will keep wicket for the 4th test because Prior is going back for the birth of his kid.

True or False ?
How interesting will it be if Prior does no-more-than-OK-ish with the bat for the rest of this game and the Third (I refuse to call it Fourth), drops a couple of crucial catches then Ambrose keeps excellently and scores something of note, and crucial, in the Fourth?

Or he could edge one of the several balls Powell got nowhere near.
Haha, indeed. I'll sdmit that Anderson probably bowled just a touch wide given the pitch conditions but he was really, really unlucky not to have Powell. It's not like he was 'chucking a Sidebottom' and bowling too short for the movement he was getting either.

BTW, I see why they call it Chickie's DISCO. Virtually every song since he's been on has been a disco song from '74 to '80.
Shocked to hear him playing 'Like A Virgin' earlier. Would have been better if he'd played it at the fall of a wicket instead of a drinks break though.

Very interesting, Ambrose looked OK in the summer just probably too many mistakes costing him, especially in the ODI format. I remember the ODI at Lords V New Zealand where he dropped the simplest catch you will ever see.

I've said before, I think Chris Read is our best keeper for the TEST format, and Phil Mustard for the ODI format.

That's a risk Prior is willing to take, believing he's the better option.

Personally i think his batting is more than good enough. I'd be happier with him as a specialist bat than I would be with Ian Bell in the side, and he should surely be batting above Freddie given their respective styles.

He's an accident waiting to happen behind the stumps, but that's the balance England are going for. It's odd how much more difficult it is to pick the side when Andrew Flintoff is fit.

Hmm, I think not TBH. Read is the best wicketkeeper in either format, and the best OD batsman available. Prior might just be the best First-Class batsman of wicketkeepers, but I'm still 100% to be convinced of his wicketkeeping calibre.

Also, Ambrose made precious few mistakes with the gloves in the Tests, though he did drop that ODI sitter. And I don't rate Mustard's batting as far as I can throw him, in either format.

Anyway, even if Read is the best wicketkeeper, best OD batsman, best whatever, he's also an ICL player so it's fruitless suggesting he play for England again now.

Prior is perfectly entitled to say there's more to life than cricket, I don't object to that at all. An accident waiting to happen behind the stumps is simply not acceptable IMO, there's no "balance" there, just imbalance. Your wicketkeeper must be competent. You then need to pick the best batsman of the competent wicketkeepers.

You're getting soft Richard; where's the rant about how Mustard only had one good season and was picked merely because he played well in one game which happened to be a final?

It'd probably be wasted in a tour thread while a match is in motion. I always try to keep posts to 2 or 3 lines in said circumstances.
