My spies have lead me to believe that this will be a 14 man squad as follows:

Ponting
Clarke
Hughes
Katich
Hussey
Jaques
Klinger
MacDonald
Haddin
McGain
MacGoffin
Siddle (if not fit, Bollinger)
Bracken
Johnson
Weakest touring Aussie side since early 90s?

What's Haddin's penalty?

Execution by firing squad would seem to be the most appropriate

I find it really amusing that those people who agree with this decision are also saying "oh ****, we've got no-one to replace him with!"
Yeah of course Symonds as a cricketer is awesome, and when he is playing with all his focus then he is very hard to replace, but obviously that isn't the case and therefore choosing a pure batsman instead of him would be the right choice.

I would absolutely love it if they pick Bracken. Someone wrote into Tony Greig on cricinfo this week to ask, "Nathan Bracken has been the stand-out bowler for Australia's ODI side for a long time now. Why is it that he never comes into consideration for the test side?" Greig replied, to paraphrase slightly, "I haven't a ****ing clue."

I don't know what's really happening tbh, when Australia were at full strength one can say that Bracken might have found it a tad difficult to barge into the test side, but for the love of god, his name doesn't even seem to come into contention, even now when virtually every half-decent seamer in Australia is jostling for a spot in the test side.

I think Bracken too has pretty much resigned to his fate, and frankly speaking, if he doesn't get picked now, then can't see him getting in the future either.

I think this will be squad if it ends up being 14 players.

1 Katich
2 Hughes
3 Ponting
4 Clarke
5 Hussey
6 Haddin
7 McDonald
8 Johnson
9 Siddle
10 McGain
11 Hilfenhaus

12 Hauritz
13 Jaques
14 Bollinger

NUFAN:

I don't think they'll take 2 spinners when neither one has proven that they're a quality test match bowler.

McGain should go - he's the next year or so as our spin option. Short of that there's no real point taking a second spinner, might as well throw the job to a bowling all-rounder type (Noffke, Harris, Dorey or McKay for the 'potential' version).

I'd go for exactly the same squad as you though - just replace Hauritz with Harris (imo).

Bollinger/ Hilfenhaus would be a game time decision - but with a leggie you'd really want 2 right armers to create something for him to work with I guess...

If bollinger is left out for mcgoffin after a serviceable at worst debut it will be a ****ing travesty.

Bollinger didn't look like a Test bowler in Sydney.

His figures were serviceable, but he just didn't seem Test class.

On the contrary I thought he bowled far better than his figures suggested. He bowled pretty well but was understandably nervous about the whole thing.

I also think we should take Warner for the experience

My 14:

Rogers
Katich
Ponting (c)
Hussey M
Clarke
Hughes
Haddin (wk)
Noffke
Johnson
Siddle
McGain

Bollinger
Hilfenhaus
Hodge if fit/ MacDonald otherwise

I don't think we need a backup spinner. With all the hype about Hughes, I think Rogers has had a marginally better season and with his record should play as the Australian opener. Jaques is unlucky to miss out but at least gets the whole Shield season to pick up his form. I'd like to see Hughes eased into the middle order if he is picked. Save him from the worst of the South African green tops.

Bowling attack looks strong too with Noffke, Johnson and Siddle all in there. McGain adds strength to the team and really has to be our new specialist spinner until he loses form or retires.

MacDonald is only in there if Hodge is unfit. He had a good first test but should only be a reserve IMO in case Hughes doesn't fire or a batsman gets injured. Other than Klinger there really hasn't been a decent domestic performer this season that deserves a spot not included in this squad.

There's an article now on SMH saying the squad won't be chosen until tomorrow! :( Can't take this waiting.

Yeah fair enough oldman.

I don't really want Hauritz, I just thought if McGain struggles they'd bring in Hauritz to keep it tight at times.

I'm not sold on Dorey btw. Sure he did well against QLD, but the batting lineup of QLD can at times crash.. so yeah I wouldn't be too confident that he'd be able to get good International batsman out at a respectable rate.

Has taken wickets against other sides funnily enough, got a few against a strong Victorian line-up a couple of rounds back iir. Think they'll go Magoffin though, age being the sole reason.

Yes, credit to him getting 11 wickets, but if he doesn't get the wickets against QLD no one would be mentioning him at all.

Against Vic's he took 3/68 and 0/25.

I wouldn't be picking him at this stage.
