May i ask what wrong has Marsh done to be dropped from the side, on the other hand Katich' ODI career is all but over.

Hughes has a case of opening instead of Warner, but i would rather have Hopes open with Marsh and play an extra bowler instead.
a. Marsh has not done enough to cement his place and is therefore hardly indispensable

b. The notion that Katich's ODI career "is all but over" is ridiculous . The guy will play test cricket for a number of years yet and as Langer has just shown, age is no barrier if you're good enough and Katich is a far better player than Marsh at this stage

Didn’t you suggest Katich shouldn’t even be in the Aus test team because he couldn’t catch?

Made a good comeback to the team but as one day cricketers go he was an anomaly in an imperious Australian one day side, a poor one day batsman. He couldn’t rotate the strike, was a poor runner and after getting bogged down he would just through it away with a nothing shot after wasting sixty odd balls.

Marsh has done nothing wrong to be dropped whilst Watson has all the resonates to be a good opener or David Warner if he fires for more than one game a series.

Yep and he proved me wrong by scoring loads of runs and taking catches

The Katich you are talking about was very different from the one we see in all categories of cricket today and it seems that he has attracted the same label as Langer i.e. not suited because of results from a different phase of his career

Watson should play but is injured

Bottom line is that Warner and Marsh havent been terribly successful so it's hardly likely that Oz will lose anything by selecting 2 players who are better in other forms of the game

Forecast for Perth today, according to weather.com: Sunny, 34 degrees, chance of rain - 0%.

Been a while since I've seen a forecast like that for a match involving NZ. Yay for Perth.

We're not a team greatly suited to heat so not the best conditions for New Zealand. Glad its a day nighter, should cool down a bit.

True, I think it was hotter in the last ODI we played there though, around 40 IIRC. And we almost won that one...

Katich is 33/34 and when a guy of same age (Brad Hodge) who is arguably one the best limited overs batsman is not even being considered anymore, then chances of Katich reviving his ODI career are pretty much next to none.

Marsh clearly isn't indispensable or anything, but at the same time he has been fairly consistent enough to hold onto his spot for now, once he starts faring badly, then only thoughts of replacing him should be entertained.

In Katich's favour he is in the setup. Going on previous selection experience, a player in a squad has alot more chance of getting a game in the other format than a player who it would appear the selectors have put a line through.

1 Shaun Marsh, 2 David Warner, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Michael Hussey, 6 David Hussey, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 James Hopes, 9 Mitchell Johnson, 10 Nathan Bracken, 11 Shaun Tait.

Tait in. Will be interesting if we play Jeets as that would have a 4 pronged pace attack against 2 seamers 2 spinners.

1 Brendon McCullum (wk), 2 Martin Guptill, 3 Peter Fulton, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Grant Elliott, 6 Neil Broom, 7 Kyle Mills, 8 Daniel Vettori (capt), 9 Jeetan Patel, 10 Tim Southee, 11 Iain O'Brien

Jeets.

Good to see McCullum keeping. Actually besides Elliott I love this team (Oram for Elliott Broom up to 5)

Haha, Australian selectors continuing their fine form, dropping their leading wicket taker, very nice.

Since 2004 Australia have only lost one match against NZ after winning the toss and have won 9.
(Conversely they have won 8 losing the toss and lost 4)

Batting first against NZ since 2004 Australia have won 12 times and lost 5 times. Yes for those of you keeping count out there every time we have beaten Australia in this period we have been chasing.

I hope Johnson fails again, but everyone else does well.

Also for Guppers the Indian to get a 50+ score.
