Cricket Team Draft - ODI edition

Goughy

Hall of Fame Member
Goughy, he's played 3 ODIs. Might as well pick Garry Sobers too.
Quite. Thought there is a difference in that Rice was one of the best Limited overs performers in the World for close to 2 decades but was not allowed to play. Sobers was at the end of his career when he played Limited overs.

Ill happily take a OD beast like Rice who was denied a chance ahead of some of the names this deep in the draft.

This draft is about me picking the team I want and Rice is 3 times the player of some others available at this stage.

Yeah, I realise that, but Sobers too played close to a 100 List A games.

SR of 102 helps pile on the runs at the death, or chase down the improbable as Australia have been finding out. Useful bowler too.

I doubt i will get to make my last selection by Monday morning(Sydney time). Going on holidays from then till Friday and i'm sure not how often i will be able to access the internet. I have only 1 opening batsmen to go. So i'm happy to PM someone a few openers that i would go for, if anyone is willing to help out.

My tenth pick and the last of my batsman is Robin Smith. From 71 ODI's he scored 2419 runs @ 39.01 with a strike rate of just on 70. Batting number 6 in my side he will be the token finisher than every One Day team needs.

Current Team
1 Nick Knight (100 ODIs - 3637 runs @ 40.41 sr 71.52)
2 Neil Johnson (48 ODIs - 1679 runs @ 36.50 sr 70.2 & 35 wickets @ 34.85)
3 Mark Waugh (244 ODIs - 8500 runs @ 39.35 sr 76.9 & 85 wickets @ 34.56)
4 Nathan Astle (223 ODIs - 7090 runs @ 34.92 sr 72.64 & 99 wickets @ 38.47)
5 Roger Twose (87 ODIs - 2717 runs @ 38.81 sr 75.4 & 4 wickets @ 58.75)
6 Robin Smith (71 ODIs - 2419 runs @ 39.01 sr 69.65)
7 Imran Khan (175 ODIs - 3709 runs @ 33.41 sr 72.65 & 182 wickets @ 26.61)
8
9 Wasim Akram (356 ODIs - 3717 runs @ 16.52 sr 88.33 & 502 wickets @ 23.52)
10 Shane Warne (194 ODIs - 1018 runs @ 13.05 sr 72.04 & 293 wickets @ 25.73)
11 Darren Gough (159 ODIs - 609 runs @ 12.42 sr 64.3 & 235 wickets @ 26.42)

International 12th Man
I select the original Albie Morkel, Justin Kemp.

A clean hitter with more than enough power to consistently clear the ropes at any ground, he averaged 36.82 when batting at 6 or 7, which he will do in this team, plus at a strike rate of over 80. He was also a very competent medium fast bowler (32 wkts @ 31.71, econ 4.67) who would've been used more if South Africa weren't already blessed with Pollock and Kallis as two world class allrounders. His international career was ended prematurely when he jumped to the ICL but he still played 85 matches and did pretty well.

Greame Smith
Shane Watson
Zaheer Abbas
Brian Lara
Kumar Sangakkara

Justin Kemp
Farveez Maharoof
Abdul Qadir
Jason Gillespie
Joel Garner

Now I have the option to either look for a No. 6 batsman, or an opener instead and put Watson there.

Just a reminder of one of the rules mentioned on the front page.
Teams will be composed of 12 players selected on the basis of a ODI side to play in any conditions, against any opposition, anywhere in the world. At the end you can determine which player misses out on the final XI..
This will mean that if we have a SIM you can bring someone in if non performing or if you want to change up your XI in different conditions.

Why do we need the 12th player? Based on the players reamaining they will be relatively useless.

I dunno about that. I can think of many decent players remaining.

I don't think it's a particularly important thing to include, but I did make it in the rules originally, so unless everyone doesn't want it anymore, it should stand.

Maybe just keep it, but everyone should judge on the final XI's and not worry about the 12th man when choosing the best teams, so it means you can pick a specialist fielder, new gun you looks gun or just a personal favourite if you like.

Actually yeh a 12th Man would be good, have a player in mind that only played a few games that I wanted to pick but would have weakened my line up considerably.

Weldone is up.

Getting a horrible feeling that the guy I want to pick, who I've been on the verge of picking with my last three picks before deciding he would last a bit longer yet, is going to go before my next pick. :(

Think a 12th man is pretty pointless, unless we're bringing back the supersub!

Is it just me, or is there a lot of average players in these sides. Not having a go at at any side in general. But across the board there not a great deal of quality after top five players or so.

I guess that issue will arise when it goes to the polls in about a week. :)
I wasn't really looking at it from that POV. More in terms of the lack of quality of ODI players all time. I would have thought will all these moderns ODI specialist the quality would be better. Though having a look around due to nature of ODIs a lot of players I thought were very good players look poor when you look at their stats. For example I can't believe Chris Harris' bowling average is that high.
