ITALY WITHDRAWS FROM ICC TROPHY

Italy has withdrawn its team from the ICC Trophy tournament in Toronto, Canada following a disagreement over player qualification rules.

The decision follows confirmation of the player Qualification Rules for the ICC Trophy by ICC Associate members at their annual meeting in London on Saturday, 16th June. Italy was of the view that players who become citizens at birth of a country other than where they were physically born should be included in the birth category of the tournament Rules.

Following the decision of the Associates meeting on the non-eligibility of the four Italian players who came into this category, Italy decided to withdraw from the 2001 ICC Trophy.

FCI President, Simone Gambino, said: "Citizenship by birth is a matter of national sovereignty for a country. We strongly disagree with ICC's right to discriminate within the framework of Italian law. However, on the understanding that the whole matter is about to be reviewed and the principles that Italy has fought for will be considered, Italy accepts today 's decision for the good of the game."

ICC President, Malcolm Gray commented: "We respect Italy's right to reach this decision, but the other Associate countries involved in the ICC Trophy nonetheless regret the fact that Italy will not now be competing.

The issue of birth and citizenship is an increasingly complex one and ICC will be undertaking a full review of player qualification rules for all events under its auspices, from Test match cricket to regional under 19 competitions

End of the story it's acually thanks (fault) to Italy that ICC changed their qualification rules- Anyway now even being a passpor holder you need to have spent at least 100 days developing/coaching cricket in the past 4 years prior o the tournament you want to play in!

i'm happy to hear from Goughy that he's really helping out getting foundation for cricket in Bulgaria!! Congrats!

Groups of six (Group A: Ireland, Scotland, Namibia, Canada, Oman, Uganda; Group B: Kenya, Netherlands, Bermuda, UAE, Denmark, Afghanistan)
Top four from each group into super eight

And the tournament runs from April 1 to April 19. Very nice imo, will assure that the best teams qualify - well, unless Oman or Uganda stage an upset in group A.

Looking at the set up of the tournament on the BBC, it says four go to the world cup and six will have ODI status for the next 4 years.

Does this mean the Kenyans could lose theirs if the finish 7th or worse, however unlikely that may be?

So you have to imagine that the main competition is between old hands like Ireland, Scotland, Kenya, Netherlands, Canada with Namibia being another possibility.

No, I agree. It was just that I was under the impression they had permanent ODI status, but if things go badly wrong in April they could lose it altogether. Would obviously be a disaster for cricket there, however unlikely.

Kenya should finish better than 6th.
Even a finish outside the top 4 would seriously damage things. Bottom line is that they need to prove that they are still one of the top Associates.
In south African conditions and with the acclimatisation program before the event, they should do OK, but there is a hell of a lot of work to do still.

Both them and Uganda could do worse than schedule another ODI series in between as a warm up.
