Open Sabadell Atlántico (Qualification) - Apr 20-26 Season I

Open Sabadell Atlántico I
Qualifiers - Barcelona

Draw

Alex de Wet leads the pack of CWLand qualifiers after the third seed completed a straight sets thumping of local youngster Marc Carretero. Fresh off a big win over another Spanish 23-year old, Juan Manuel Cortés, in the first round, de Wet thrashed Carretero in the qualifying final to earn a passage into the main draw of the Open Sabadell Atlántico I. de Wet took less than an hour to smash his world number 310 ranked opponents; his usually volitile and abrasive style toned down somewhat in a clinical performance. de Wet, who was listed second on Tennis Pro's most hated players (behind Danijel Micic of Serbia), has struggled for form this season; but enters the Barcelona tournament a big chance of advancing in his first round clash against Anvar Juraev.

It was a more disappointing qualifying effort from the three other CWLanders in the qualifying draw. Martti Korpinen was seeded fourth, but was taken out in straight sets by eventual qualifier Marcus Heindrich 7-6(2) 7-5 in his first round clash. The straight sets loss probably payed a disservice to Korpinen as both sets were very even, but Heindrich just had enough about him to secure victory. In their first appearances for CWLand, Scotland Rivers and Daniel LeRusso both got a taste of the big time with first round defeats. LeRusso was given the top seed in his first match and was roundly beaten by Christian Mary, but he did show some positive signs in his 6-2 6-4 loss. Elsewhere, Rivers gave up a one-set lead against Romel Solares and fell devastatingly short of victory 4-6 6-1 7-6(1).

Qualifiers: 1-Christian Mary (FRA); 2-Renato Varas (CHL); 3-Alex de Wet (CWL); Kim Roger Olsen (NOR); Marcus Heindrich (GER); Jean-Luc Sagna (FRA); Christopher Durand (FRA)
Wildcards: Fernando Aguero (ESP); Ivars Emsis (LAT); Fok Zhenyu (CHN); Javier Villaneuva (ESP).

Looking forward to my clash with Highsmith. 84th vs 86th seed should be a good match to watch on one of the outside courts.

Apologies about guys missing out. And probably Dittmar's hardest-hitting interview yet.

Open Sabadell Atlántico I
Round of 56 - Barcelona

Draw - 1st Section
Draw - 2nd Section
Draw - 3rd Section
Draw - 4th Section

Headlining the CWLand portion of the second round at the Open Sabadell Atlántico will be an all-CWLand clash between Alex de Wet and Sven Oxenstierna, after the former recorded an impressive first round win against Uzbekistan's Anvar Juraev. The qualifier was already in good form following his straight sets qualifying thumping of Marc Carretero, and he continued his good touch by taking the first set off the Uzbek number one. But after easing to the first set, de Wet started to show signs of his volatility as Juraev stormed back into the match to go up a break early. One broken racquet and a code violation later, de Wet was forced to go to a decider. In an even final set, the CWLander regained his composure and sealed a dramatic 6-4 3-6 6-4 victory to move to the second round.

In the same section, Randy Smeltz continued his good form with a straight sets thrashing of Mexican Felipe Pelayo. The world number 46 took little over an hour to dispatch his lower ranked opponent 6-2 6-3, and will need to continue this kind of form into his second round contest with sixth seed Dmitry Orlov who enjoyed a rest. The 28-year old was too good for his Mexican opponent who at times struggled with Smeltz' ability to keep points alive. Elsewhere, Roy Daniels and Rob Bowenburg recorded victories in their first round clashes. Daniels dropped the second set to Frenchman Jean-Alain Depuis 1-6, but was otherwise untroubled as he recorded his first victory on clay 6-2 1-6 6-3. Bowenburg was forced to come back from a set down to beat Brit Oscar Highsmith in three sets; a victory which marked a much needed return to form for the struggling CWLander. His unlikely 3-6 7-5 6-2 victory sets up a second round clash with steady Belgian Mark Harmel following his win over 11th seed Tom Vollan.

Unsuccessful in their attempts to record a win were Jarko Maxum and Spas Delev. Maxum was again given a tough draw, and must be shaking his fists at luck as he suffered a 6-1 6-4 defeat against 13th seed Ninteh Doh. The Japanese veteran was steady as ever as he just proved too good for the CWLand youngster to advance to the second round, whilst Delev managed to give up a one-set lead against Sebastian Moss as he slumped to defeat. The pigeon-faced Moss dropped the first set in a tiebreaker, but completely changed the momentum of the match with an early break in the second set. The confidence was exactly what the meek Brit needed as he set up a second round clash with Doh 6-7(6) 6-1 7-5.

Seeds Out: 11-Tom Vollan (NOR).

Daniels unsure about Luxembourgian

Just hours before his second round clash with Luxembourg's Oliver Engel, CWLand's Roy Daniels has made a tremendous gaffe as he admitted he's never even heard of Luxembourg. Ahead of today's contest, Daniels was asked what he thought about his seeded opponent. "I've only seen a little bit of Engel, but the bits I have seen of him make me think he's a very good player," Daniels said, before adding: "He's certainly one of the best French players going around". When grilled over his answer, Daniels did little to cover up his mistake. "Luxem-what?" a bewildered Daniels asked, "I've never heard of it." Daniels has developed somewhat of a reputation over making ill-timed comments; earlier this month he was said to have called compatriot Brett Read a "joke" during a drunken binge in Houston, TX.

Backing Smeltz for a big tournament from here.

Solid interview from Dittmar too, can't expect much else from him.

Open Sabadell Atlántico I
Round of 32 - Barcelona

Draw - 1st Section
Draw - 2nd Section
Draw - 3rd Section
Draw - 4th Section

Sven Oxenstierna and Randy Smeltz could be facing off in a quarterfinal if results go CWLand's way following a mildly successful second round in Barcelona. Oxenstierna was drawn against compatriot Alex de Wet and looked the better player en route to a 6-2 6-4 victory. Oxenstierna, who has outlined his goal to prove himself against the world's best, continued his fantastic performances in the early rounds of tournaments as his younger opponent struggled against his workhorse style. Whilst many have criticised Oxenstierna's inability to cause the best players troubles on service, he had enough about him to beat the volatile de Wet in straight sets.

Oxenstierna faces thirteenth seed Ninteh Doh in the second round; the winner of which could face Randy Smeltz if the 28-year old can overcome ninth seed Nilikar Midid in the third round. Smeltz, a survivor of the slums in Braunschweig before he was snapped up by Dear Leader Nixon, showed his hunger remains as he came from a set down to defeat sixth seed Dmitry Orlov. Orlov, ranked 30th in the world, started brightly to take the first set 6-3, but found himself on the end of a tight tiebreaker loss. Smeltz grew in confidence as he rallied back into the contest and took advantage of an injured Orlov to power his way through the decider with nine winners to seal an appetising third round clash with the Croatian Midid.

It wasn't good news in the first section for CWLand, though, as both Roy Daniels and Rob Bowenburg met their downfalls. Daniels' embarrassing gaffe - where he admitted he had never heard of Luxembourg - was made worse as 16th seed Oliver Engel wiped the court with the unseeded 25-year old. The 19-year old Luxembourgian took the first set 6-1, and whilst he was troubled in the second set, pulled out the perfect tiebreaker to bagel Daniels and advance to a near impossible third round clash with world number four Daniel Páez Blanco 6-1 7-6(0). Bowenburg was likewise outclassed; this time against more experienced opposition as he fell to 27-year old Belgian Mark Harmel in straight sets. It was almost a direct opposite of the Daniels-Engel contest as Harmel edged the opening set in a tight contest, before rampaging home against "The Lob" in the second set to advance 7-5 6-1.

Seeds Out: 6-Dmitry Orlov (RUS); 8-Marcelo Alavos (PAR); 12-János Varga (HUN); 14-Oleg Puder (RUS).

Bottom half opens up for Zhijun, Oxenstierna

A series of big upsets in the third section of the Barcelona draw has paved the way for a possible top ten clash between Sven Oxenstierna and Zhijun Sun in the semifinals. Three seeds - Orlov, Alavos and Varga - fell in second round action; the biggest victory going to Chinese wildcard Fok Zhenyu as he defeated eighth seeded Paraguayan Alavos in straight sets. The upsets leave the Chinese third seed, Zhijun, a run free of seeds until the semifinal at the latest where second seed Oxenstierna could await if results go his way. "[Oxenstierna] hasn't beaten any one of note yet," Zhijun said following his come-from-behind win against Chilean qualifier Renato Varas. "He's made top ten by not winning a tournament yet, so I'm not too worried if I play him because I have proven I can win tournaments," he added in a swipe at the world number eight. He will, of course, have to focus first on his third round clash with world number 135 Felipe Menon of Brazil.
