Britain's Henry Charles has caused the upset of the day with a straight sets thrashing of ninth seed Miroslav Brdar in the semifinals of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters. Charles has been the sleeper hit of the tournament, having dropped just one set - back in the first round. But his good form showed no sign of ceasing as he thumped the Croat 6-3 6-1. In front of a packed Monaco crowd, Charles showed his versatility against the highly ranked Brdar as he raced through the first set. But it was nothing compared to the second set; Charles sealing a place in his first ever ATP Tour tournament final in just under an hour.

His opponent will be twelfth seed Daniel Páez Blanco who faced his toughest match yet against fourteenth seed Illya Altman in the first semifinal. Blanco was forced to a tiebreaker in two successive sets, but emerged as the slightly more polished player on both occasions to seal a deceivingly convincing straight sets victory 7-6(2) 7-6(4).

Seeds Out: 9-Miroslav Brdar (CRO); 14-Illya Altman (UKR).

Daniel Páez Blanco has shot up the rankings to number four following a dominant straight sets victory over Great Britain's Henry Charles in the final of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters. The overwhelming favourite kept his brilliant run of form in tact with a 6-3 6-4 victory over the unseeded Charles, who also had been in rampant form since losing the first set of the tournament. The match started poorly for the world number 13 as he was broken in the first game by the persistent Spaniard. And whilst he showed signs of improvement, Charles could never really get the better of his more experienced opponent who was undoubtedly more comfortable on clay as Blanco took the set 6-3. Charles managed to stay neck-and-neck with the twelfth seed early in the second set following some tough service games; the unseeded Brit holding in a fifteen minute slogfest to draw level at 4-4. But Blanco was eventually just too good for a tiring Charles as he secured his third tournament title, his unbeaten record on clay, and a 6-3 6-4 win.

Seeds Out: None.

Rather Mad Witch
At least I lost to the champion.

Really, though, need to win against a top ten player at some stage to be worthy of the seeding.

Spaniard sets sights on no. 2
Blanco sears into top five

Daniel Páez Blanco's third tournament victory has seen him surge into the world top five after leapfrogging nine others following a superb Monte Carlo performance. Blanco's first ATP Masters Series crown comes on the back of a brilliant win which saw him come out of a very tough section including world no. 1 Jason Hall and world no. 8 Sven Oxenstierna. Whilst he trails Radivoj Daneu by some 585 points, continued good form in the clay season should see him challenge the Serb for second spot. Other big risers this week were Henry Charles (up 11 to 13) and Sanchez Emelio (up 19 to 50) who both produced big Monte Carlo tournaments. Rick Henson's injury sees him continue his slide outside of the top five and he will eventually fall out of the top ten, whilst Tom Vollan's poor form sees him slip to no. 47 from no. 43.

Top Fifty

In CWLand, Sven Oxenstierna may have been defeated in the third round, but he remains the nation's highest ranked player despite a fall to world no. 8. Among the big risers, Billy Spleen's impressive qualifying run sees him edge into the top eighty from no. 89, whilst Jojo Mustard also rises five places to world no. 41. Jefferson Drake's appearance in the third round wasn't enough to halt his fall to number 15, whilst Brett Read continues to slide as his poor form continues.

I think I'll rest for the Rome Masters tbh. Also nice to see me shoot up the rankings moving up 2 places after not playing. Maybe that should be my new strategy, lol.

Just to clarify, do you mean players who have participated in any 1 of those tournments will rest, or players who have competed in all 3? :)

Also, I assumed qualification to the masters series is based on each players rank? If so, what ranking do we have to get to?

SirBloody Idiot

Meant all three :) . Rome has 56 available spots, and off the top of my head seven of those go to qualifiers and four to wildcards. So somewhere between 40-50 for direct qualification.

Awesome, thanks :)

Delev is pretty keen to check out the sights at Barcelona, and will try to push his way back into the top 100.
