South African Domestic Season 2008/9

Disagree, always good support in East London and it is a vital catchment area for young African cricketers. EL native, Boucher could captain the new franchise whilst Ntini and Tsotsobe could open the bowling.
I said it does need a franchise? Not sure about Kimberley though, it's about an hour away from Bloemfontein

Hope the rain holds off for today’s 20/20 game between the Eagles and Cobras. Kimberley is expected to have over 1 inch of rain and the weather forecast suggests there is a 80% chance of a downpour.

Bit of team news for the Eagles and Thandi Tshabalala has been dropped for disciplinary reasons. South African U19 offie, Aubrey Swanepoel comes in for his franchise debut. Young Rossouw is off with the U19's, so former U19 captain, Dean Elgar comes back into the side. Whilst Ryan McLaren's cousin, Adrian comes into open, as does big hitter, Alan Kruger.

As for Loots Bosman who did his knee last week, apparently his injury isn’t career threatening but he won’t be seen until next season.

Good also to hear Deon Kruis on commentary for SuperSport, I liked him when he did a few stints with Sky last year. Just a shame he isn’t playing any franchise cricket, decent bowler for mine.

TTBoy, just to clear up. What exactly is Ryan Mclaren's position in playing for SA now?. Thanks.

He won't until his deal runs out with Kent (he may not even play then...). McLaren currently plays for the Eagles as an overseas player, as does Kent team-mate, Martin van Jaarsveld for the Titans.

50 up for Ryan McLaren's older cousin, Adrian. His played a blinder, swept Roger Telemachus for a big six. The Cobras fielding has been awful.

How are the Eagles making their quota requirements with Loots and Thandi out.

Good total from the Eagles, 176. It will be a tough chase for the Cobras one suspects. Old war-house, Telemachus took some real stick and went for nigh on 50 runs of his 4 and it was only Charl Langeveldt and Claude Henderson who recorded decent figures. As for the Eagles, fine knocks by openers, van Wyk and McLaren and a nice cameo 46 from Dean Elgar.

CJ de Villiers is a big lad, must be 6'5, maybe bigger. The kid has something about him, terrible radar currently but he does get some real bounce and bowls with a decent lick.

Ricky Januarie ringer, Henry Davids has just run himself out. Huge blow for the Cobras.

Pro 20

Eagles 176/3 (A McLaren 61, van Wyk 59, Henderson 1/21) beat the Cobras 88 (Puttick 23, CJ de Villiers 3/15, Elgar 2/6) by 88 runs

I see. Big loss then..

In one day cricket maybe but McLaren was never going to be the answer to Shaun Pollock. Ryan wants to play IPL so that could create some problems with Kent and if they don’t get promotion this season; they may which to mutually agree to terminate his contract as a cost cutting measure.

The Cobras look horrible. They seem to have a good team on paper but they're bowling is just terrible.
Lot of the players living on past 'glories' - Puttick, Ontong, Philander, Kleinveldt et cetera. Just looking at the latter two and they come across as they couldn't give a ****, both grossly overweight and criminally pretty talented cricketers who are still very young. It’s a real waste. Ontong from all reports is too nice a guy to be leading the side.

I rate Levi, van Zyl whereas Davids is in excellent touch and Langeveldt and Henderson are great professionals. Still have the players to work with but I just think it is a poor reflection on them that they sign retired cricketers and play them in favour of young guys such as Plaatjies. Ask the Eagles who they would rather face, a guy who hasn't played professional cricket in over a year and is carrying real excess, or a kid who bowls close to 150kph?

The Lions Titans Pro20 game has been washed out without a ball bowled. Real shame for I was looking forward to watching that. Titans are really up against it now if they want to qualify for the Champions League.

Lions would also be concerned with the washout after they lost their first game. Better news for them is that Neil Mac and van Jaarsveld will come into their side ASAP. Although, they have lost Jonathan Vandiar for the season, Vandiar seriously injured himself attempting a run in their last Pro20 game against the Eagles.
