Cricket Team Draft - ODI edition

Nate

You'll Never Walk Alone
Nah, you're alright mate.

Though I'll be hoping that some minor mishap will befall you when it comes to your next pick causing you to miss out on your preferred pick ;)

I'd laugh heartily then I can assure you.
My blind love of Bracken didn't start me off well. ;)

I already have RtD so to continue with supporting the Associates, I select grade cricketer, John Davison

TBH, with Hussey and Dravid I need someone to whack the ball at the top of the order and he is a good pick for that role at this stage of the draft.

Feel sorry for Jamee you know, was a keen participant in both drafts, hope he's sorted soon

I am a bit torn between two players here but will plump for the one who has more versatility. I select Shane Watson. He has a good batting record (35.08 avg) with a capacity for big hitting (81.90 sr) and has featured at every position in the order right from opener down to number 9, add in his workhorse bowling and good fielding and he is overall a pretty good one day cricketer.

My team so far:

Greame Smith
Shane Watson
Brian Lara
Zaheer Abbas
Kumar Sangakkara
Farveez Maharoof
Abdul Qadir
Joel Garner

Looking for one more seamer and that should fill out my bowling attack, but this team has been built from the start on high class batting with lots of depth. Considering Watson can bat in multiple positions and Lara has a terrific record opening, I have quite a lot of flexibility in what type of batsmen I round out the lineup with which is always good.

Shoaib Malik

With 4749 runs with an average of over 35 and a strike rate of almost 80 with the bat, and 126 wickets at an average of almost 35 and a strike rate of almost 4.5 as a bowler; Shoaib Malik is a true ODI specialist. I wanted a batting all-rounder who could bowl spin, and Shoaib Malik came almost uncontested among the players remaining. He'll be useful as my 6th bowler. Moreover, he can bat anywhere from 1 to 6 which gives my team great flexibility. He can rotate the strike, can score fast with punishing strokeplay and can even slog hard when the situation demands. He is a very good batsman to have at crease when chasing tricky targets. Not only that, besides Miandad and Walsh he becomes another candidate for captaincy in my team. For now, I shall keep him at 3, but later if I find another opener (to drop de Villers to 3) or another 1st down specialist, I might consider dropping him to no. 5.

Team till now:

AB de Villiers
Desmond Haynes
Shoaib Malik
Javed Miandad
Chris Cairns
Curtly Ambrose
Courtney Walsh
Muttiah Muralitharan

Economy rate of 4.38 and a batting SR of over 83 means he's going to continue on with the momentum from the batsman and is bowling is useful too.

Was a toss up for me to take him or Lamb at my last pick - actually wrote out my post nominating Oram and the reasons why, before deleting it unposted and taking Lamb instead, on the basis that I needed a gun middle order bat more than another allrounder at that point, but Oram was definitely going to be my next pick if still available.
