Wow, what a game between Wellington and Northern Districts.

McGlashan hits the last two balls of the innings for six off Gillespie to win the game for them!

I was down at the basin today. Was the first look I've got at the ND wonderboys Williamson and Boult. Lightning didn't quite live up to his name, but he was slippery and could bowl a decent yorker. From the bank I was a bit worried about his height, but when I got a look at him up close I realised he's tall enough to be a good quick, at about 6'1".

Williamson was competent enough, without looking as spectacular as his reputation would suggest. But he's only 18 so that's impressive in and of itself I suppose.

Gillespie bowled an astonishingly bad first over, and then threw it away right at the death. Can't blame him too much though, considering he did get two wickets in two balls at the start of the over. In addition, Napier could've easily run out McGlashen in the previous over. All in all Wellington should've won, and the fact that they didn't is a good example of why they won't be making the finals.

Don't need to be overly tall IMO to be a great fast bowler. Bond, Lee, Akhtar were all around the 6'2" region I think.

So Bahnz, after seeing Boult, Southee and Gillespie up close in the same game, in which order would you rate them in terms of pace?

I was following the live scorecard and couldnt believe it when I had seen ND had won...almost pissed myself laughing. GO ND!!! Have gone cold on Gillespie again also, think we have guys who are better wicket takers and go for less runs.

Oh, Gillespie was the fastest by miles. Coming in late in the day, with a Wellington gale at his back, he was absolutely flying in and he wouldn't have been far off 150 kmh. Too bad he couldn't really utilise it.

Second fastest would be Boult. His yorker, in particular, had the Wellington boys jamming their bats down late. But I think his absolute max pace out there would've been maybe 140, more likely high 130's. He doesn't have a big run up, but he has quite quick arm speed, which one would expect considering his action is blatantly modeled on Wasim Akram's.

Southee was looking a bit loopy when I saw him bowling (late in the innings), so he probably wasn't much quicker than low 130ish.

I'm wondering if Southee is feeling the workload from this season and late last season. Also if his form is down, then his speed is definitely going to suffer.

Good on Boult - got the wickets and that's all you can ask from the lad. Also learning to bowl a good yorker is a great skill so try and master early in his career.

Wonder if next season the batsmen will be use to his action and consequently it will be more difficult for him to snare their wickets. Also how old is he?

Boult is 19.

I'm still yet to see him play live, when the hell are ND going to have a game at Eden Park?!

jesus, Boult didn't even look near 6 foot when I saw him on TV and I would be more than a little surprised if he was really 6'1"

Just looking at some pics I've realised Boult isn't actually short, he's just very weedy and looks like a 12 year old....looking at some pics of last year's under-19s team there were a lot of shorties in there, Southee looks like the tallest and then Worker and Boult are maybe just over 6'.

Southee is tallest, has an inch or two on me. Worker is slightly shorter than me IIRC, he'd be around 6'2 i think.
