I swear he usually gets given the ball well within the first 20 overs. Usually 3rd or 4th bowler which Vettori never does. (This was in the days of the first 20 overs being power plays basically though nowadays its first 15 and then a random later period)

Jeet's gets given the worst jobs for the team and it blemishes his record somewhat but somebody has to do them. Vettori and the selectors know that Jeets gets the arse end of the work and comes out looking okay which is why he is a constant in our lineup. He has been getting a lot of unfair criticism for THAT over in the T20 but I frankly found it hard on the man that he had to come in and bowl the penultimate over in those conditions after he'd already been taken off. But if there is one guy in the team who won't shy away from a hard task its Jeeves, it didn't work on that occasion but he'll do it again in the future and pull it off and get no credit at all. Which irks me, besides Oram and Vettori (two of the most economical bowlers in world cricket) Jeets is our next hardest to get away and never gets the kudos for it.
Death bowling is not a totally poisoned chalice. I can cop a higher e/r but then his average should come down. As it is he's just getting hit and not really deceiving anyone or taking wickets; or conversely, he's taking wickets at the death but is impotent through the middle overs.

32 is hardly a poor average in international cricket considering Jeets almost always seems to get only top order wickets.

Dunno how to respond to that. It's like saying a batting average of 20 is acceptable.
Since Twenty20 and Powerplays came along the definition of an acceptable economy rate has changed. I think anything under 5, for a guy who often bowls during Powerplays and at the death and who has played most of his career after T20 started, is alright.

It also, looking at bowlers in order of economy rate on StatsGuru, ranks him in the top 42% of all bowlers in ODI history. A lot of bowlers who were brought in as 'death bowling specialists' for NZ have far worse economy rates - Adams, Hitchcock and Gillespie for example. The same reasoning was used when Patel came in, and he's done far better.

I thought the 2nd ODI was a washout, only just saw that the Windies pulled off a thriller. Hopefully the Black Caps can pull off a win in the next one to make it a good series. A bit of a shame that the weather has played a role, I suppose it was fine everywhere else but ChCh?
It absolutely pissed down in Christchurch. Hail storm, electrical storm going on overhead. When we left, the streets were flooded. A saw a BMW with the water lapping over the door sills on the way back to our accommodation.

I was amazed when I got a text from a mate at 6 o'clock saying that the game was back on with 28 overs a side to be bowled.

Obviously, the cynic in me says that they only bothered forcing the players onto the pitch so they didn't have to refund the tickets. The game was slowed down considerably by having to dry the ball between every ball and until the last 2 overs of the game, I could categorically call it the worst ODI I'd ever had the misfortune to see. It was atrocious.

My highlight of the day was a drunken supporter saying things like, "HIT IT HARDER!" each time the batsman played a defensive shot. Then following this up with "THAT'S THE STUFF!" as the batsman smashed one high in the air to be safely caught by the fielder beneath it. ODI crowds know even less about the game than 20:20 crowds.

Have to say I thought the same. Was certainly a factor in not charging admission when they returned to the field.

The criticism of Patel is unfair imo. He bowled really well in that game until he couldn't grip the ball anymore. I thought he had made a spot for himself in he squad instead of Gillespie up till that point. Putting patel the spinner on at that stage was probably not a good idea in fact most spinners would have a similar problem and have the runs beaten out of them then. Bad call by Vettori imo even though Patel is thought of as a death bowler. We should count that game as only a half game anyway (because it was). Still a chance to make it 2 to .5.

I thought Patel got it wrong bowling every ball of that over so quick. On a slow deck, he had to make the batsman use the pace, we've seen how effective that can be on reasonably sized grounds in Twenty20 and it would've been further emphasised by the rain affected wicket.

The last ball of his over is a perfect example of this.

This is why I don't rate him, and why I think he is fairly expensive. Usually he is actually quite accurate, he just isn't clever enough. Anyone remember when Mascarenhas hit him for like 4 sixes in a row at Eden Park? He bowled the exact same ball 4 times in a row, a 105kph attempted yorker. Death bowling for a spinner is not that simple. Vettori did the same thing when he got butchered by Gayle in the 20/20.

I'd be really interested to see your NZ test & one day line-ups tbh, because I've only really known you to bag players. Presumably you'll have no Vettori in your test team for a start, given your constant rubbishing of him.

I believe he'd have Roneel Hira (sic.)

Not too much different from the current teams. Patel is better than Gillespie/Franklin in ODIs so he'd actually probably make my team about as often as he does now. I'd be experimenting with some more options for that final spot in the ODI attack. Mills and Fulton would be given extended runs in both forms of the game.

A bit too soon for him I think. If there's an injury next summer then maybe, but not before then.

Definately leave Boult alone. While his performances have been solid this season, he's hardly set the world on fire, and I could only imagine the kind of pain that Gayle would inflict upon him.

It's a bit murky in the capital today, despite a fine forecast. Heres hoping the weather holds off.
