Cricket Team Draft - ODI edition

2.05 - Pick 19 - Michael Holding - RF - West Indies

Last time round, I went with a metronomic, deadly accurate seam bowler, and now I've given him the ultimate lighting-fast partner, meaning that if the batsmen can survive the corridor of death, they'll be faced with Whispering Death...

142 wickets @ 21.37

Team so far:

MA Holding
GD McGrath

GIMH is up, Heath also needs to pick.

Shaun Pollock

I reckon that was who Uppercut has been talking about, btw
Same tbh.

I originally wrote Pollock's name down as my original pick, but quickly decided on Viv Richards.

Pollock is an absolute champion ODI player, he'd make my All Time XI for sure.

I had Holding lined up. With that plan nixed I pick Klusener.

Matt79 up and HDS to rejoin when he is ready

Yeah :)

I'd have picked him first without hesitation. His bowling alone gives him a reasonable claim to be the best ODI player ever, when you throw the batting in it's a non-contest for me.

Very surprised by some of the early picks.

G.I Joe is up I believe now.

Damn it was going to pick him right until I had a snap change of heart and went with bond. Wish I hadn't now. Still would have been lucky to get imran in both drafts.

Surprised he lasted this long, ill be interested to see how people construct their team as far as a 5th and possible 6th bowlers go. A lot of people will need a keeper who will probably only bat at 7 so will be made up of part timers.

Zaheer Abbas

62 ODIs, 60 inns, 6 not outs, 2572 runs, 47.62 ave, 85.80 SR, 7 centuries, 13 fifties.

Out of players that scored at least 1000 ODI runs in the 1970s and 1980s, he has the 3rd highest average and the 4th highest strike rate (only Viv Richards is ahead of him in both categories).

My team so far

Curtly Ambrose

One of the best bowlers of all time in both forms of the game, Curtly Ambrose played almost his entire career in the 90's when batsmen really started to give the bowlers a hard time in ODIs, and still had an economy rate of 3.48! If you are a modern generation cricket lover and looking at that stat you think he was even marginally defensive, then you couldn't be more wrong. His staggering bowling average of 24.12 was much lesser (around 20-21) for the most part of his career. His height of 6ft 7inches deceive some who think bounce and deadly bouncers were his main weapon, but in reality he was capable of excellent seam movement too. So, when you send your team to bat in any pitch that's not out-n-out flat, be ready to see a lot of his famous high-fives in the first 14 overs; and in case the pitch is flat, don't expect to make runs more than the size of a peanut in the initial powerplays.

Team so far:
Curtly Ambrose
Muttiah Muralitharan

With these two in the bowling department, I don't care whether the match is in the cementy Perth or in the dustbowl of Feroze Shah Kotla, my bowlers are going to dominate at least the first 40 overs of the game...

Gutted. Ambrose was my next pick. Need to do quick check again to find the next possible best option.

Dennis Lillee

The Aussie quick had the brilliant bowling average of just 20.82 in his 63 matches and a terrific economy rate of 3.58.

Lillee ranks in 7th place economy wise for bowlers with over 100 wickets and third in averages.

Basically copying MorgieB's Test side.
Richards, Lillee.
