Black to the Future (NZ story)

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Was rubbish in my game. Hay is amazing though, averages 66 & 41 in Tests and ODIs respectively.

Cricketer Of The Year
Really good result in the first test against India there Ed - I've always struggled against the Indians in my ICC games. And what a performance from Ross Taylor!

Thanks. Have to admit I edited out Kumble and Ganguly because they've retired, so it's not a wonderfully strong India team. I'm guessing their squad for next year will be much stronger, bringing in scarily good guys like Badrinath.

so it's not a wonderfully strong India team.
I should not have said that. At stumps on the first day of the second Test, India are 429-3. Tendulkar 214 not out.

Might leave this game for a little while...

2nd Test

Tendulkar destroys NZ

The result of the second Test was clear after the first day - India finishing at 429-3, with Sachin Tendulkar unbeaten on 214. New Zealand had been torn apart in the final session - the score at Tea was only 252-2, with Tendulkar on 103 - and had lost their best bowler, Daniel Vettori, to a minor foot injury that would keep him out for the rest of the match.

The hosts fought back strongly on the second morning, taking the last seven Indian wickets for just 44 runs, but their reply with the bat was nothing short of disastrous. Sreesanth took a hat-trick as New Zealand crumbled to 12-4, and then 16-5, a position from which they could never recover despite the best efforts of McCullum, Oram and Mills.

The second innings wasn't much better, as they again collapsed to 58-4. The hero of the first Test, Ross Taylor, came crashing back to earth with a pair. Again Oram and McCullum did their best, but had too much to do.

Right, now I need your help. I'm afraid Vincent's run out of chances, so I'm looking for someone new for the ODIs. Hay isn't an option at the moment, because although he's been great in FC he's only averaging 22 in List A.

Have a look, and tell me what you think (bearing in mind that Oram, Spearman, McCullum and Fulton are already in the squad).

I tried Papps in the England tour and he scored 10 runs in 4 ODI innings, so I'm a bit reluctant to try him again even though his stats are good.

Am leaning towards Broom, because Dewayne Bowden's direness in real life outweighs his good stats...

And Broom it is. I've also included a Wellington bloke called Edwards who has taken 35 wickets at 17.4 in List A this season. He's not likely to get a game in this series though.

Good stuff. Broom is a pretty gun ODI player in 2006. He's out of form for me atm though, hoping he can contribute to further England humiliation.

NZ cruise to easy win despite Dravid ton

Jeetan Patel ensured that India were going to fall well short of a defendable total on a perfect batting pitch, despite a heroic 106 from Rahul Dravid.

India had made a solid start, with the score at 57-1, when Patel came into the attack. What followed could best be described as carnage. Before you knew it, Patel had figures of 5-2-7-4, and India were 67-5.

It was an almost impossible position to recover from, but no one told Rahul Dravid. With good support from Praveen Kumar, Munaf Patel and Zaheer Khan, Dravid produced a superb knock to guide his team through to 214 before being clean bowled to the last ball of the 50th over.

Patel remained the pick of the bowlers despite receiving some punishment from Dravid in the second half of his spell, finishing with 4-37 from 10.

New Zealand lost Guptill early in the chase, but Spearman, Fulton (40) and the debutant Broom saw the home team through to the reasonably easy target.

Oram makes it 2-0

A 69-ball 81 and bowling spell of 2-48 by all-rounder Jacob Oram was the main feature of a comfortable 43-run win for New Zealand in the 2nd ODI against India.

After losing the toss and being put in to bat, things started badly for New Zealand. They collapsed to 35-4, with Sreesanth taking three. But McCullum turned things around with some sensational hitting, and he was supported by newcomer Broom (32) before combining in a 94-run partnership with Oram.

Some late hitting by Vettori (24*) and Patel (11*) saw the Kiwis through to 252.

In reply India started reasonably well, with Sehwag and Tendulkar scoring at better than the required run rate in their 2nd wicket partnership of 59. But then Vettori came to the middle and did what Patel had done in the first game, ripping the heart out of the middle order.

Tendulkar did his best with a fighting 73, and Kumar blasted 38 from just 27 balls, but India never seemed likely to get near the target.

Jeetan Patel - 11* from 5 balls, 10-1-45-0

Athlai

Not Terrible
Haha loving the extra Patel coverage, Vettori expensive but got all the wickets, and Tendulkar typically a gun. A good tail end performance by NZ there to win the match as India would have been confident of chasing a lower score IMO.

Top stuff. Oram is a real lost cause hero in ICC. Gets a fifty to recover the innings.

I hope I haven't just jinxed him.

I think you did, he got out for 18 and...

India surge back into the series

India bounced back from two losses in the first two games with a comprehensive 59-run win in the 3rd ODI. After posting a modest total of 217-7, their bowlers did a superb job to skittle the home team for just 158.

Kyle Mills took the key wickets of Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar in the first three overs to give New Zealand the early edge, but Wasim Jaffer batted his way back into form with a stylish 72.

Useful scores of 34, 47 and 43 from Dravid, Laxman and Karthik respectively helped put India in a strong position towards the end of the innings before Mills and Scott returned with three quick wickets to dent India's hopes of a score of around 240.

In response New Zealand lost Guptill and Fulton to consecutive balls in the first over, and never really recovered. Taylor was superb in his innings of 45, but it was too brief to have any importance in terms of the match.

Jeetan Patel - 10-2-31-1 and 4 from 7 balls

Bugger. :( Shame I can't adjust the squad at the moment, Guptill's having a real form slump in the ODIs and I don't have any other batsmen in the squad.

Broom's been awesome though, scores of 59, 32 and 25 in his first 3 ODIs. Although the scores are heading in the wrong direction...

Spearman ton seals series win

A blistering unbeaten 107 from opener Craig Spearman set up a comfortable chase for New Zealand in the 4th ODI, finishing with a seven wicket win which gave them an unassailable 3-1 lead in the 5-match ODI series.

As has been the case throughout the series, a superb job was done early in the innings by opening bowlers Kyle Mills and Bradley Scott. By the ten over mark, India had lost the wickets of Jaffer, Sehwag and Dravid.

Tendulkar and Laxman put on a good partnership to get the innings back on track, but a flurry of wickets for Vettori, Patel and Oram dented their hopes of a good total.

New Zealand started with a series of cracking boundaries from Spearman and the struggling Guptill, whose 22 gave brief hopes of a return to his best form. Spearman kept going after Guptill departed, and was well supported by Fulton (38), Taylor (36) and Broom (18* from 10 balls) as the home team cantered to an easy win with almost eight overs to spare.

Jeetan Patel - 10-0-47-1
