The CW Cup: battle of the association football teams

It's a bad day for the English as both Wellington Phoenix &, horrifically, Boca Juniors both advance by 11-7. Would've probably backed Wellington on underdog grounds, but Boca Juniors?!?! Not in this lifetime.

Anyway, next up:

17. Partick Thistle v 18. Plymouth Argyle

19. Sydney FC v 20. Cheltenham Town

Stedly's Jags face Langers's green army and, in the rubbish accent derby, the pride of New South Wales face Gloucestershire's finest.

Is the Boca hatred because of their Argentineness, or is there more to it?

More. They're Maradona's () team*. First he played for and his boyhood fancy. As a consequence River Plate are my nominal Argentine side, purely because they hate Boca so very much.

*The fact I've adopted Andoni "The Butcher of Bilbao" Goikoetxea as my avatar should tell you how I feel about Dirty Diego. Andy forever won himself a place in my heart thanks to this wonderfully cynical lunge.

Ha ha fair enough mate. As I mentioned in another post I was actually at the Boca stadium a few weeks back and it's certainly dominated by Diego. Made it all the more surprising when I was looking at the club stats and he'd played less than 100 games for them - he's revered in a way that none of the club record breaking stalwarts are or ever will be.

I'm pretty sure he played for Argentinos Juniors before.

BI's vote makes it 11-1 to Partick, so I'm invoking the mercy-kill rule. Sydney lead Cheltenham 8-4, but the pride of the west country still has a little over two hours to come back.

Meanwhile:

21. FK Bodø/Glimt v 22. Celtic

Sam Vimes's boys take on the, er, Bhoys. Sydney v Cheltenham remains in progress lest there be any doubt.
