Magnificent day at the cricket. Ponting's ton was one of my favourite moments at the G. Pity he couldn't go on with it and really should have been more aggressive to Harris who they seem to be showing a lot of respect to. Hussey was unfortunate and Hayden and Symonds, the less said the better. I thought Katich looked brilliant untill he shut up shop after lunch and Clarke's innings was pretty boring but he's still there so full respect. As a stroke player, Haddin is currently the best in the side by a large margin. Best player in the side to watch since the start of the home season, sucks he couldn't last another 10 minutes, if he had we'd be ahead currently. Johnson for a 50 tomorrow.
Hussey unfortunate? Was a reasonable bit of bowling but pretty ordinary play by him too, in the lead-up and to the dismissal. Let's not give him a free pass. Though, his shot wasn't as egregious as Hayden and Symonds particularly.

For those that watched the day's play, how (good) were Steyn's bowling and Ponting's ton?
Steyn bowled terribly in the morning and wasted the new ball, the usual story of struggling to get his line right to left-handers. His spell just before lunch was better and he should have had Ponting out in the 20s when McKenzie dropped a sitter. Then after lunch there was a fascinating passage of play where Steyn bowled full half-volleys to Ponting looking for swing (there wasn't much around- some swung, but most didn't). Ponting was happy to drive at every one of them and he scored a lot of runs very quickly but the ball missed the outside edge by micrometres a few times when it moved in the air. Steyn also got his line right to the left-handers and got Katich out with an excellent ball that nipped back in to him. His pace was well up at 145-150K all day and that's what got him the wicket of Hussey, trying to leave but not getting the bat out of the way quickly enough.

As for Ponting, once he fought through Steyn's post-lunch spell he tore into Ntini and looked like he was on course for about 300 before Harris got him just before tea with a bat-pad.

Edit: Okay, Uppercut beat me to it by time and also greatly by quality. :D

In the early stage of the game, both Steyn (first spell) and Ponting (pre-break) were rubbish. Steyn was wide and failed to probe, Ponting was apprehensive and knicked a sitter.

After return of play, Ponting was unstoppable, smashing the crap out of the ball in every direction. Lots of great drives and he turned the ball into a rocket. Steyn found his rhythm and 'asked a lot of questions', as they say, beating a few of the bowlers on various occasions.

Bit vague, but there's not a lot of the day I remember in great detail.

Hopefully we can see a Steyn classic and have him skittle the tail and end up with a five or six-fer.

Yeah true, it about time we all come to terms that Hussey too is human (yeah.. i know that would be breaking news.. to many) and is very likely to make an error, cricket is big leveller and so far Hussey has had an unbelievable run so far, but the law of averages was bound to catch up with him.

Steyn should be given credit too he bowled well enough to deserve that wicket, and Hussey on his part played quite an ordinary shot.

Well done to Ricky Ponting on a stroke-filled classy century although he would be disappointed not to kick on. Dale Steyn actually bowled his fastest deliveries towards the end of the day which is quite unusual and shows me that he probably bowls within himself even at 145 km/h. He is really going to test the Aussies as the summer goes on. I think honours are pretty even at this stage and we are in for another classic test match between the world's best 2 sides.

It's unfortunate that whilst trying to leave a ball it found the edge anyways. Obviously he should have got the bat out of the way better, it's still an unfortunate way to get out. Especially for a leaver of Hussey's quality.

You know when the MCG will have a better atmosphere?

Richmond vs. Carlton - Round 1 2009.

Imagine the roar when Cousins shrugs a Judd tackle, and then streams through the middle hitting Richo on the chest

Honestly, was talking about that during the game today. There's already a whole group from work planning on going and quite a few mates will be going as well. Can't wait.

Not sure why he'd kick to CHB where Richo spent 97% of this season (mopping up from Jake Kings' ridiculous run then handball to no-one tactic, no doubt).

Richo's legs and tank have to give way eventually don't they :( 34 this season.

Plus, he'd probably want to go forward full time again if Cousins is half as good a kick as he used to be.
