Group B - Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka
Thanks to another steady knock by Thilina Kandamby, Sri Lanka secured top spot in Group B with a 3-wicket win over Bangladesh. The heavily favoured side struggled to 97-7 against the impressive Bangladesh spin attack, but Kandamby kept his cool to score 40 unbeaten for the second game running, while Thilan Thushara notched a quick 28. They paired up for 70 unbeaten from 44 balls and Thushara lashed a six over cover to complete the game with 2.3 overs spare.
When Bangladesh batted they recovered well from a troubled start against Mendis and Murali. Mohammad Ashraful curbed his typical aggression and contributed a calm 35 at number three, and he allowed Shakid Al Hasan (22 off 11) and Naeem Islam (45* off 27) to tee off in the closing overs and secure a very competitive total. It was not enough, however, as the batting depth of Sri Lanka proved good enough to send them into the quarterfinals.

Having toppled the might of South Africa, England confidently made several changes to their team to take on USA at Trent Bridge. Ryan Sidebottom and Luke Wright entered the team and the batting lineup was greatly reshuffled. There was not batting to be done by England, however, as they first restricted USA to 85 all out and then scored the required runs in 9 overs flat.
Stuart Broad (4-16) and Andrew Flintoff (2-19) were far too good for the Americans, who were often victims of their own excessive enthusiasm. Wickets tumbled to a series of aggressive shots and the poor effort was summed up by Thyargarajan, who smacked a Swann full toss to Flintoff in the covers to end the innings. There were few expectations of trouble for England in the chase, though Orlando Baker got a ball to creep past Prior's defenses and into offstump. From 22-1, Swann and Shah accelerated to carry their team past the halfway mark. Shah and Flintoff were out in the same Masood Mohammed over, but Kevin Pietersen hit consecutive sixes off Lennox Cush to win the game in the following over.

After yesterday's excellent performance, New Zealand failed to book their place in the quarter-finals after a horrible bowling effort against Pakistan. Shoaib Malik took full control of the game as Pakistan rattled up 187, and then easily defended the target against poor New Zealand batting. The heavy nature of the defeat means New Zealand rely on another Pakistan win to have a chance of qualifying for the next stage.
After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Shoaib was brutal against the new ball, and only Mills brought some control as he managed a maiden to Salman Butt. It was short relief for New Zealand, however, as the Pakistanis rattled up 90 in the first ten overs despite Salman hogging the strike. Shoaib was well supported by Khurram Manzoor before some poor calling by the youngster resulted in an 18th over run out, but by that time they had already tormented Ryder, Oram and Southee and had rattled up 169 for two. Misbah and Manzoor rotated things around well towards the end, boosting the total by a further eighteen.
Shoaib Malik didn't need to use himself in the bowling effort, as New Zealand conspired to their own destruction. Surprisingly, Akhtar was only given one over, but Tanvir vindicated the decision by having McCullum caught behind; some good strokes from Ryder and How saw New Zealand back in the running at 34 for one, but that was as good as it got. Charging down the wicket, Ryder was stumped easily on 21, and the slide continued as the remainder of the order slogged out in successively more embarrassing fashion. Umar Gul ended the innings by having Franklin caught at mid on after Franklin and Mills had added 22 for the final wicket.

A half-hearted West Indies bowling effort did not prevent the Caribbean side from reaching the quarter-finals, as Andre Fletcher made the pitch look surprisingly easy considering yesterday's pathetic efforts. Zimbabwe were infuriated into using eight bowlers, to little effect, though their eighth-choice man Williams did well.
Sammy struck the first wicket, as Masakadza was caught smashing, and after entertainment from Chibhabha, who struck two sixes, Williams and Taibu fought against Sammy and Gayle to score runs. Bravo came back with two wickets towards the end, but Dabengwa hit a couple of sixes off him, resulting in a healthy total of 154 for six.
However, West Indies were brutal in their chase for a spot in the quarter-finals. Fletcher struck four sixes, smashing Utseya into the attack as early as the fifth over, and though Williams struck a brace, West Indies were never in danger of failing to breeze to the total.

Irfan Pathan took five wickets in twelve balls as India qualified for a quarter-final match with West Indies. Though the net run rate calculations meant India would qualify with any win - and, conversely, that New Zealand's only hope rested with Pakistan getting an almighty thumping - it did not look good for India after having been taken apart inside 12 overs. Yet, they went one better, and Salman Butt could only stare on in disbelief as his side collapsed utterly and embarrassingly.
After Sehwag had set the tone with two sixes in the first over, Umar Gul castled Tendulkar and Gambhir with his second and third delivery of the game. Dhoni paired up well with a rampant Sehwag, but one big shot dropped short and Manzoor snatched it off the ground. The lower order looked like they had rarely played spin before, as Fawad Alam took five for 14 including three ducks and India crashed to 103. Yuvraj, in despair, made 22 not out but failed to hog the strike.
Evidently taking batting lessons from the Indian lower order, Pakistan proceeded to collapse to 24 for six, as Irfan Pathan struck with his fourth (Malik caught deep Zaheer), sixth (Manzoor caught at wicket), ninth (Misbah caught close Tendulkar), eleventh (Younus lbw) and twelfth (Afridi skying). Wiith Harbhajan taking a wicket during the powerplays, not even Salman's smashes could help Pakistan.
Yet, they only needed 82 runs from the last four partnerships, and Alam had the sense to leave the scene to Salman. Glorious hitting off Harbhajan, Sharma and Tendulkar turned the tables, and Pakistan were 59 for seven before another disaster struck - Sehwag trapped Alam lbw, then had Salman holing out, and Gul inside edged. Tanvir fought, but with Akhtar unable to concentrate, Pakistan were whittled for 68 - yet they win the group, leaving New Zealand on the outer.

Kingsley Clapham smashed four sixes to become the Cricket Web hero as they posted a remarkable 184 all out after falling to 90 for six midway through the innings. A six-wicket over from Neil Pickup completed the humbling, as Cricket Web showed how farcical the inclusion of Zimbabwe without a qualifying tournament truly was.
A lackadaisical top order effort ensured that the Zimbabwean trundlers picked up wickets at regular intervals, with Stedman nipping behind early, Chaulk lazily dragging on, and Fuller sweeping to Sibanda. Butler, Kearsley and Mørk followed in quick succession, all guilty of bizarre shotmaking, and when Masakadza's leg spin reaped the wicket of Dan Smith after the batsman had thumped three sixes, things looked mildly dangerous for the webheads.
The lower order doubled the total in less than half the time, however, as Clapham gave Chigumbura, Masakadza and Dabengwa the hammering their bowling deserved. An enterprising 17-run display gave the crowd brief hopes of a 200-run total, but Clapham was caught napping by a swift call, ending the innings 14 balls prematurely.
Zimbabwe's innings will linger in the memory of some, mostly for the comical. A double hat-trick - Chigumbura, Dabengwa, Utseya, Mupariwa, Price, and Mpofu - after Pickup had conceded seven to Taibu in his first over, saw Zimbabwe go from a promising 82 for four after seven overs to a 102-run defeat. Rose was smashed about by Taibu, taken for 39 as the wicketkeeper made 47 off 19, but in the grand scheme, it mattered little.

Group B - Bangladesh vs Australia
Australia had to dig deep with a big innings by their captain to get past a spirited Bangladesh into the quarterfinal stage. Faced with a target of 196, Australia breathed a sigh of relief as Andrew Symonds hit consecutive fours to win the game with an over to spare. But it was the batting of Ricky Ponting, with a magnificent 90 unbeaten, and Mike Hussey, with 65, that set up the win.
Bangladesh won the toss and batted first with the confidence of a much better team. And their positive approach brought exciting and pleasant results. The top three batsmen leaned into the Australian bowlers and Mitchell Johnson in particular was in for harsh treatment. Even so, when Raqibul Hasan and Naeem Islam were united at the crease, Bangladesh were in a bit of trouble on 87-4. The fifth wicket partnership was sufficiently stubborn and ultimately spectacular in adding a quickfire 108 to the cause. Raqibul Hasan took the lead and hit 5 fours in the last two overs to take his personal tally to 88 and the team score to 195-4.
It was then an imposing total ahead of Ponting and his men, and they quickly found themselves in trouble chasing it. Shaun Marsh (6) hit a four in the first over, but Mashrafe Mortaza surged back to dismiss him and then Shane Watson (0) by its end. After 1 over Australia were 6-2. As such Luke Ronchi was a bit more reserved than usual in compiling 20 from 17 balls, but heated blood got the better of him and he hit Abdur Razzak wildly to the Bangladesh captain at short cover. Rather predictably, South Africa stormed past USA and into the final 8 of the World Twenty20. They made only one change from the team that lost to England, with Hashim Amla in for AB de Villiers, but he did not come close to batting. The South African bowlers did their job well enough in the early going as they reduced USA to 51-9 with pace and skill too great for their minnow opponents. But from that stage Kukreti (15 not out) and Thayagarajan (33) battered 50 runs to post a reasonable score of 101. Though Kallis and Morkel shared 5 cheap wickets, it was Mark Boucher who proved the star with his brilliant glovework accounting for six dismissals. It ultimately earned him a Man of the Match award.
That score was never likely to be enough, however, even after Graeme Smith was caught at point for a first ball duck. The ensuing pairing of Loots Bosman and Herschelle Gibbs played easily as ever. Particularly Bosman hit the ball with authority and raced through to a half-century from 25 balls. Gibbs, on the other hand, understood that there was no rush and settled for time at the crease. He finished unbeaten on 41, while Bosman improved his score to 62 in a 9-wicket result.

Even so, when Raqibul Hasan and Naeem Islam were united at the crease, Bangladesh were in a bit of trouble on 87-4. The fifth wicket partnership was sufficiently stubborn and ultimately spectacular in adding a quickfire 108 to the cause. Raqibul Hasan took the lead and hit 5 fours in the last two overs to take his personal tally to 88 and the team score to 195-4.
It was then an imposing total ahead of Ponting and his men, and they quickly found themselves in trouble chasing it. Shaun Marsh (6) hit a four in the first over, but Mashrafe Mortaza surged back to dismiss him and then Shane Watson (0) by its end. After 1 over Australia were 6-2. As such Luke Ronchi was a bit more reserved than usual in compiling 20 from 17 balls, but heated blood got the better of him and he hit Abdur Razzak wildly to the Bangladesh captain at short cover.
