Franklin simply MUST be in the test team. He is a quality swing bowler and is now proving himself to be a glorious batsman. Oram probably still wont be available for WI. So this would be my team:

1. How
2. Redmond (last chance)
3. Fulton
4. Taylor
5. Flynn
6. Ryder
7. Franklin
8. McCullum
9. Vettori
10. Mills/ Southee ( I really cant decide)
11. O Brien ( close call with Martin)

Bats extremely low with Vettori at 9. With still what I believe to be the best four bowlers in the country. I see Franklin as a quality middle order batsman so I would give him a berth at 7.

I can't believe how adament people here are to chuck in Franklin who has just returned to first class cricket from injuries and hasn't found his full stride yet. Remember one mr. tuffey who was pretty much in the same boat? There is no gaurantee that he'll be match fit for international games and to be frank (haha) he probably would face a period of poor bowling which may curtail the rest of his career. Too early for him, let's stick with bowlers we know can play allright. The problem with the tests was largely not the bowling but the poor batting and I don't see Franklin coming in as a specialist batsman thats sends a few balls down the pitch. He should definately stay away from ODI team, was never really very good in those games.

Franklyn is surely a must, especially when you look at the West Indies batting lineup. Everyone apart from Shiv and Ronnie Sarwan are poor against left arm swing bowling. Gayle is quite often a walking wicket against left arm medium pacers.

To answer a few questions:

Brendan Nash has been successful in the middle order for Jamaica and we are crying out for a sensible number 6 batsman to form a partnership with Shiv.

Leon Johnson is an exciting left handed Guyanese middle order batsman who performed well in the Carib Cup last year and thus earned his spot in the squad. He bats like Lara with the jump across the crease and flamboyant off side shots, but he does not quite have BCL's appetite for runs.

Lionel Baker is a young fast medium bowler from Montserrat who has been picked out of the blue even though he has a terrible FC record. He is obviously fairly talented but I really don't agree with his selection.

Kemar Roach is an extremely exciting young express pace bowler form Barbados. He has been training with the squad since Under 19 cricket and has all the tools to succeed at the highest level. Unfortunately he has little or no experience due to the Barbados selectors inexplicable fascination with past it bowlers who have turned away from the senior team like Collymore and Collins.

I agree with Roseboy's lineup for the most part, but Powell must go unless he absolutely destroys Auckland in the warm up. I would replace him with Roach.

Not that I'd pick Powell myself but that's the most likely lineup I see barring a good performance by someone in the game against Auckland.

I wonder who Franklin will replace. On merit from the Aussie series you would have to say that Martin and OBrien performed better than Southee, but i dont really think with our batting line up we can carry two bunnies at the end, so IMO, one of those two has to make way for Franklin. Southee stays on potential.

The tragedy may be that we may change the bowling lineup but, .. because there is little else, the batting lineup may stay the same.

It will also be interesting what the selectors and this new coach do. A cleanout or hope these same players will improve. Bring in more 28+ year old journeymen, or take a punt on youth.

For me, With the top 6 batting order, only 2 guys are certainties. Ryder and Taylor. Everyone else is in danger for their place.

Taken that Ryder and Taylor should bat 4 and 5, we need 2 openers, a no3, and a 6.

For the openers, The contenders are,

Redmond- I dont think his skill level is up to it. Not a long term option. Sooner gone the better.

How,-I hoped he would improve and turn out good but now I think what we see now is what we are going to get in the future. He seems to miss the ball a lot,not the same hand eye coordination as others. If selected long term, might drag his average up to 28 or 30 but not much more.

McIntosh- too inconsistent, Sinclair reborn ( before death, strange). would follow a string of low scores with a really, really low one IMO.

Hay- hasnt done well this year and hasnt opened for a few years, not since age group cricket. Youth on his side and last few years showed good consistency which is a rarity in NZ cricket.

Guptill,- Hasnt scored a first class hundred yet (HS 99) . Young but apparently talented.

Bell- Groundhog day

Papps- See Bell

Cumming- 33 years old now. He might average 25 or so if given another chance. See papps.

On assessment of this I've decided to support the west indies,

I heard a suggestion from John Wright that they're considering dropping Jamie How down to number 3 and inserting a new opener, rather than batting Fulton at number 3. Interesting but flawed thinking.

My team: How, Redmond, Fulton, Ryder, Taylor, Flynn, McCullum, Franklin, Vettori, O'Brien, Martin

Redmond did looked solid enough, in the first innings, so I think that its fair enough that he gets another chance. Flynn has some serious issues with pace bowlers swinging it into him from around the wicket, so unless he's able to work on that quickly, I can easily see him making way for Oram when he's fit again. Calls for Martin to be dumped (largely on the basis of his batting) are unfair. He's the second most experienced player in the side, and we really can't afford to lose that experience at present. It's not like he bowled that badly in Australia either (6 wickets at 36, and was probably unlucky not to get a couple more). Bringing Franklin in compensates for the lack of ability of O'Brien and Martin.
