**Official** New Zealand in Australia

Well, in the end that more or less went as expected. Very similar to recent series actually, with the kiwi's playing well for the first couple of days, before the aussies broke them on day three of the first test, and then going on to utterly dominate the rest of the series.

Plusses
O'Brien: doing a fine job as first change seamer. Hard working, accurate, aggressive and determined. Pretty much exactly what we heard about him from his Wellington days, but dismissed as a result of New Zealand green tops. Really pleasing.

Taylor: went better than I thought, and had he not run out of partners at Brisbane, he probably would've gone on to grab a third hundred. Real problem with dealing with session breaks and playing round his pad though.

Vettori: So unlucky not to get 4 or 5 wickets at Adelaide, and even managed to be a constant threat at Brisbane. Batting was disappointing but you can't always ask for everything.

McCullum: Slick glovework and he batted well in the second test. The annoying thing is, that if he was able to play like he did in the 2nd innings, every time that he went out then he would be perfectly capable of succeding as a top order batsman. Frustrating player.

And that's about it. Flynn clearly has massive issues with the ball slanting into him, Ryder isn't a number three batsman and seems to be even worse at throwing away his wicket in tests than he is in FC cricket, Fulton was unimpressive, Martin and Southee (with the exception of a couple of spells) were generally unpenetrative and I don't really think I need to say anything about the openers.

On a different note, I was really shocked to see just how much Australia has slipped. In terms of the difference between the two sides, it was no greater than it was 4 or 5 years ago, when these two teams last played, which means Australia has declined as much if not more than the kiwi's (which is obviously A LOT). Not too surprising I suppose when you lose 3 legends and 2 very good players in the space of 12 months, but still rather startling all the same.

Thought this was pretty impressive actually, referring to O'Brien:

The 32-year-old Wellington seamer's three wickets took his tally this year to 30 from eight tests at an impressive average of 20.30, as he cemented his place as test regular.

That places him 15th in the world this year, and of those, only South African Dale Steyn (60 wickets at 19.41, No 1) and England's Ryan Sidebottom (47 at 20.25, No 4) have better averages.

Pah. Any old chump can watch a game with Tendulkar in. How many ODIs has he played now?

Now watching a player like Davis, well, that's commitment. Saw 'live' at least 2 tests that Davis played in. Probably more than that. He earned my respect with his sculpted curly blonde locks, immense pace and complete lack of brain matter. What a legend!
Yeah, akin to India's Romesh Pawar.

Thoughts on Clarke being named MOTS? Thought Johnson was a little unlucky myself (no surprise there :p). 14 wickets @ 11, and scored a fairly important 30 odd in the 2nd dig at the Gabba to help Katich whilst the rest of the batting was rather dismal.

He started up an indoor cricket competition here when I was in intermediate school. He's been in my house and I'm sure he was hitting on my mother.

Disapointing, went to bed when we were 4 down and was hoping wake up and see a massive partnership between McCullum and Vettori, hey I can dream.

Not sure we can take many positives out of this series, O'Brien had a reasonable series and thats about it.

Southee confirmed for me that he is, well lets be honest, hopeless if the ball isn't doing anything, I think he needs a few years playing domestic cricket and play the odd game on a green top, hopefully this will also develope his batting.

Ryder isn't a number 3 and we should stick with Fulton at 3 and play Ryder at 5 where he belongs.

I would stick with How as he has age on his side. Knowing our selectors they will persist with Redmond the entire summer based on his first innings, even though his average is only 23 after 14 innings.

Flynn, hmmm not sure, gritty yes, but I think in the long term he will be replaced by Corey Anderson.

As soon as Franklin and Oram are back the better, without them our middle/lower order is crap, we simply can't carry 2 bunnies in the team if our top order folds.

Who are you going to play instead that will be capable of bowling out the world's best batting lineup on the world's flattest pitch?

Good to see McCullum get a good score, big fan of his and it's about time. Did he play well?

Seriously at the moment we don't have any seamers who could bowl out India or Australia cheaply on a flat wicket. Southee is only 19, needs time to hone his skills and domestic cricket is the place for that.

Hmm, nah i think he'll develop more playing at test level. By the time he's 25 he'll be a better bowler with six years experience in tests than he would be with six years in New Zealand cricket. The only reasons i wouldn't pick him would be if i thought someone else could do the job better (and i don't, but then i don't know a lot about the NZ FC game) or if i was concerned he was putting a mental or physical strain on himself. He might be and he might not, everyone's different.
