Butler strikes late, but Sri Lanka on top
3rd Test - Day 2 - Cricket Web XI vs Sri Lanka - Asgiriya Stadium

The part-time talents of Chris Butler broke a nagging fifth wicket stand, but Sri Lanka went to stumps in the lead by 64 runs. Angelo Mathews sneaked a thin edge through to Mørk and was out for 30. Stumps were called immediately, without completion of the over. It was the end of a partnership of 74 that helped place Sri Lanka on top of proceedings after two days.

In the morning Butler was central with the bat for the Webbers. He was the only batsmen to register any serious resistance in the tail end of the Cricket Web XI first innings. Fellow overnight batsman, Alex Blackman (34) looked in good shape at crease, but lost his balance and was caught adjacent to offstump by Amerasinghe. Butler continued and in sum he hit 7 fours in 68. However, the Webbers lost their last 5 wickets for 38 runs to be all out for a modest 183. All 10 wickets were shared between the two pace bowlers and Muralitharan.

In turn the Sri Lankan innings was off to a poor start. Kumar Sangakkara nicked David Kennett to slip first up, out for 0. Cricket Web XI looked energetic and fired up in the field, but Mahela Jayawardene quickly neutralized them with a series of attacking strokes. Even with the arrival of Richards' left-arm spin, Jayawardene continued to attack and smacked two boundaries through the offside. Outside of the spotlight Malinga Warnapura rode his luck, dropped twice behind the stumps before reaching 50 from 81 balls.

Sri Lanka looked set to reach tea with just one down until Richards intervened. Recalled to the attack he tempted Warnapura into a push outside offstump and Mørk finally clung onto the ball. For his next trick Richards got Samaraweera to push forward and inside edge to the bat-pad fielder. Two wickets in two balls sent Sri Lanka into the break on 140-3. Into the final session Richards continued to pose problems, but was made to wait almost an hour before he took his third wicket. Jayawardene hit a low full toss back at the bowler, who took a fine catch low to his left. He left Dilshan to rebuild again with debutant Mathews, and Sri Lanka went past CW XI's 1st innings score with ease and confidence.

A desperate Pickup tossed the ball to Butler with thought of an historic whitewash slipping away. Three balls into his over the part-timer broke through and summoned the close.

Sri Lanka close in on consolation win
3rd Test - Day 3 - Cricket Web XI vs Sri Lanka - Asgiriya Stadium

Cricket Web XI started the day with Chris Butler and Dave Richards, and both were difficult for the Sri Lankan incumbents to negotiate. True to form Richards broke through with some flight, and Prassana Jayawardene was a victim of his over-zealousness, caught at mid-on for 2. As expected Pickup handed over bowling duties to Kennett at Butler's end. The move was a masterstroke, as it produced two breakthroughs via Kennett's continued resurgence. The first of the brace was crucially Tillekeratne Dilshan, caught well by a nervous Mørk behind the wicket.

Only two wickets were needed and though Richards was one away from a second career 5-for, Pickup took the new ball as soon as it became available. He asked Nick Borcich to use it, and that too was an effective choice. Within a 3-over spell, Borcich improved expensive figures with a brace of his own. Sri Lanka had to settle for 275 all out and a still impressive lead of 92 runs.

That left Cricket Web XI with a nervy mini-session of 38 minutes before lunch. And it was not long in before they met difficulty. A miserable series came to a close for Mørk (1) with a lacklustre push outside offstump to be caught behind. The struggling top order could have crumbled further had Dilshan clung on to a simple chance when Andrew Cloete had 13, but it was not until after lunch that Sri Lanka struck again. By then Cloete had looked closer to his best and hit 5 fours and a six en route for another Test 50. On 42 he made a fatal error, attempting to cut Muralitharan and supplying a thin edge behind.

The courage of the first innings was a distant memory when Butler (1) came and went to Mendis for a fourth time in the series. And the collapse continued with Will Kerr and his hard hands nicking to short leg for a duck. Enter Alex Blackman, the new man for a crisis, and he was quickly away sweeping Murali hard for a boundary. But he only added 2 more to his tally before he edged a doosra into the waiting hands of slip. At 93-5 CW XI relied heavily on Pete Young, who tried to save a poor personal series with a brave half-century.

His task got much more difficult too, with the cheap losses of Mike Wilson (6) and Dave Richards (3) - 129 for 7. Just the tail for comfort, Young continued to push on closer to an outstanding hundred. Mendis finally got the better of Borcich for 7 and quickly followed with the potentially frustrating Kennett before he had scored. It seemed Young was destined to be stranded short of his ton, especially as Pickup appeared clueless against Mendis and was twice dropped by Mathews in a remarkable couple of balls.

Young grabbed his new lease on life and slammed a short ball over midwicket for six and then chipped down the track to hit a boundary straight after. From 95 he added just the single before Mendis deceived him with some flight, and the opener was caught in the covers for 96. CW XI were all out for 181 and set a meagre target of 90 for Sri Lanka to pick up a consolation win.

In the 11 overs they faced on the evening the home side made excellent progress to 52-1. Borcich struck early to remove Malinga Warnapura (7), but Sangakkara made amends for his first innings duck with bold attacking strokeplay.

That's the club form I've been showing all year... seriously looking like a batting allrounder.

Incidentally, that's two Tests in which I've hit the winning runs. Hakon, you're bound to know how many other players have done such a thing more/less often.

Liam, how can I teach myself how to bowl again?

Sri Lanka cruise to consolation win
3rd Test - Day 4 - Cricket Web XI vs Sri Lanka - Asgiriya Stadium

Sri Lanka wrapped up an easy win in the third Test by 9 wickets. The start of the fourth day was delayed by more than an hour, but when Kumar Sangakkara (51 not out) and Mahela Jayawardene (29 not out) finally got to the crease, they had few problems knocking off the 38 required. The victory is scarce consolation, however, as the hosts lose the series 2-1.

Great series win. Good to see Blackman have a good series in his first full series in the side. Nice series from the Borcich, Kennett and Richards. Will be tough call if we play a game on a pitch that required a extra seamer. Pickup might have to go.

Mathews debuting (Y).

Good series win that.

Would've been interesting to see Thomas & Demeza bowl on those friendly pitches, rather than the roads they've pretty much had their international careers put on hold for. :p
