Cricinfo commentators lend a hand to your cause: 9.5 Broad to Gambhir, FOUR, glorious stroke, Gambhir just leans into width and square-drives imperiously through the off side, a shot of a man in great form ... did India err by opening with Tendulkar?

I sent my feedback. Don't think they'll publish it though.

Why would you not open with the best ODI opener of all time?
Lots of reasons. He's not going to score faster than Sehwag or Gambhir, so you're not moving him up to take advantage of powerplays. There's no point moving him up to score a big innings, he's more than capable of that at 3 or 4 if the more rapid scorers get out. If Tendulkar gets out, the other two are less capable of rebuilding than Tendulkar.

Sehwag and Gambhir have been a hugely successful opening partnership for Delhi, Delhi Daredevils, India in tests and India in ODIs, they bat particularly well together, seem to love doing so, and breaking them up could affect their form. Not only that, but they're going to be India's opening partnership in all forms for a long time to come, so in the long term keeping them together is the right choice. Neither is anywhere near as good at 3 or 4 as Tendulkar.

Why would you have him at 1 rather than 4?

Because Tendulkar doesn't like batting at 4. He was forced into doing it at the WC and his dislike for it was palpable IMO. Gambhir batted 3 throughout the CB series, so its not exactly foreign territory for him.

Many times throughout his career Sachin has been shoved into the middle order, and he always eventually comes back to opening. Why? Because its the best role for him, and really, there's never been such a complete opener as him in ODI cricket.

I've always thought Tendulkar's fussing about not liking batting four is silly TBH. He's done less well there than at the top of the order, sure, but he's more than capable of batting there. Apart from very early in his career he's done it very well. If there's other openers (like I feel there were with both Ganguly-Sehwag in 2002 and Ganguly-Uthappa in 2007) who are no use anywhere else, I feel it's best for Tendulkar to bat four.

Gambhir, unlike others, is clearly perfectly comfortable at three so there's nothing wrong with going Sehwag, Tendulkar, Gambhir. But I don't think Tendulkar's dislike for batting four is sensible, at all.

Maybe in your opinion, but if your best batsman feels more comfortable elsewhere in the order, then you bat him elsewhere in the order and put someone who's more comfortable at 4.

Oh yeah, you find it silly. But a batsman who has 20 yrs experience behind him, and 400+ ODIs, should be knowing better than you.

The sheer weight of runs Tendulkar has scored in his career has absolutely become a burden on the Indian team it can no longer afford to shoulder. If they could drop him soon, particularly before the next time he plays against Australia, that'd be great.

If, that is, there is someone.

Currently, there is (not four, but three - Gambhir). At some points in Tendulkar's career, there hasn't been.

I'm perfectly fine with Gambhir at 3 with Tendulkar in the side. Gambhir has got a pretty good record at number 3 and seems to suit that position just fine. Tendulkar and Sehwag at the start is a fantastic opening partnership, only for Gambhir's solidity and strokeplay to come in and keep the tempo going. This balance worked somewhat well in Australia and it would be a pretty daunting top 3 for any opposition bowling unit.
