U19 Cricketer
Sherlock's not playing for CD at the moment. Either injured again, or completely out of the running. For the upcoming season, our batting is so weak I'd almost be tempted to go with this lineup.

How
Cumming/Bell/Ingram/McIntosh/Guptill/someone roped in from the crowed/Redmond
Fulton
Ryder
Taylor
Flynn
Oram
McCullum
Vettori
Franklin
Martin/Southee

Bit light on bowling, I know, but in New Zealand conditions Oram is as useful as O'Brien. The last spot is tricky. Do you go with Southee, his talent and the extra bit of batting he provides? Or do you stick with Martin and his extra pace and experience?
I like the look of that team but I would play both Martin and Southee, moving Flynn up to open. This is the consequent team to play WI:

1. How
2. Flynn
3. Fulton
4. Taylor
5. Ryder
6. Oram
7. McCullum
8. Vettori
9. Franklin
10. Southee
11. Martin

Yeah well said. As soon as he has played every team they will work him out and he will be destroyed. I think Smith will love facing him this summer.
Johnson has plenty of critics (I'm one of them) and he has obvious technical problems BUT:

a. he is seriously rapid;

b. he has great stamina; and

c. he takes wickets (4 per test is very good)

Furthermore, this is the first test IN HIS ENTIRE CAREER where the pitch has been really helpful to him and he cleaned up

I think people now have to admit that there is something about him that makes him really tough to face when he gets it together and he MIGHT become top class

Yeah exactly.

He's been bowling "badly" at times but has still been consistently taking wickets. He's very awkward to face and when he gets it in the right area, he's clearly dangerous. He gets a huge amount of wickets with deliveries pitches up just outside off, and and lots more edges behind the wicket that don't take wickets. Just because you don't see a left-armer swinging it in and trapping right-handers in front with unplayable deliveries doesn't mean that they aren't bowling wicket taking balls, and Johnson clearly is.

His contribution has been valuable and right now he deserves his spot in the team, and that's all that matters.

Bottomline is he's deadly where the ball swings.

Hmmm yeah I like the idea of opening with Flynn, really what harm is there in giving him a shot there.

They said the same thing when they tried Fulton opening. Hasn't been seen in Tests since.

I would not open with Flynn

It might work but it could also destroy one of NZ's most promising young players

Leave him where he is and let his career develop

If they want a sacrificial lamb, try McCullum - he's probably more suited to the top than 5

Yeah agree with this. I don't want to see anyone from the middle order promoted, but if it happens, I'd prefer it be McCullum. He has least to lose, career wise and probably would do just as good a job, if not better, than Redmond has done.

Now I promised myself that I would not get worked up by yet more pathetic NZ batting performances, yet if we'd even batted sastisfactorily, we could have won that match. At the very least our bowlers have earned the right to bowl beamers in the nets.

I might start the BBFS (Bring Back Fleming Society).

Looking back through the last few pages the next person who suggests Fulton, Flynn or Hay opening shall be named John Bracewell II

And we shouldn't stack the batting, no way should we sacrifice any of this good bowling attack for another batsman, instead make the ones we have score some runs instead of thinking "Oh, the next guy in will do it all for me."

Lol @ beamers in the nets.

The bowlers should be spewing. If I was one of the bowlers i'd be absolutely ripping into the batsmen giving them hell for leather. I wouldnt stop until they either cut their wrists or started batting properly. How many stupid shots led to dismissals for NZ batsmen in this test? Ryder, Redmond, How (twice), McCullum, Flynn, Elliott, Vettori.

Oh hang on...thats the WHOLE TOP ORDER. Oh well, it was to be expected.

Fulton for Elliott in Adelaide, with everyone moving down a spot and switch McCullum with Flynn.

All out in the 1st hour, oh what a surprise.

Please please please drop ELLIOTT for FULTON and move FLYNN up the order.
Sadly, I have know faith in NZ selectors. :(

The gist of Vettori's comments post-match:

"I'm happy with McCullum at five"

"Elliott was mainly picked as a number seven batsman, his bowling wasn't really considered."

Whatever he's on, I want some. I need an escape from reality.
