***Official Australia in India***

Now I know how "other" supporters have felt the last 10 years.
Not good.
When England won the ashes in 05, I felt good for them, but now I just feel kinda angry at India.
Having no crowds for the tests was lame, they claim to be the biggest ($$) cricket nation in the world, but could not fill a ground for any day of any test.

I having only been following cricket properly since 05', it's weird that even I feel like a connoisseur, because I would rather test cricket over any form, all the time.

ODI and 20/20 results are forgotten, Test Matches and series are always remembered, this is a big blow for Australia. Congratulations India
Part of the reason is the attitude of the board and state cricket association.
Most of the grounds have very crap ammenties and seats are just terrible. In such hot weather people don't want to be spending a day on suhc grounds.
The Nagpur ground is new one and quite good but its too far away from the city. Cost way too much to get there as no adequate bus service or anythign to the ground. Plus they were only selling 5 day passes... no one-day passes. Which is ridiculous and test match tickets are generally quite highly priced for avg indian supporter. It wasn't so much lack of interest but people just didn't have feasible way to enjoy the cricket at the ground.
BCCI doesn't seem to care about the crowd as long they are getting the tv revenue..

Crowds were disappointing by 20-20 standards. However, you forget tickets were sold out for Delhi and Bangalore tests.

Mohali was definitely a disappointment.
Poor transport, almost 50% of tickets being given to people who aren't going to come and only 5 day tickets being sold, according to the ABC. I don't think it's a secret that huge crowds are a massive benefit for the home team, it really is absurd that it seems to be accepted as it doesn't impact the balance sheet much.

Yeah, he only took 12 wickets on debut.
At what price? 30 per wicket? That's a joke considering he got tailenders too.

I am not taking away anything from him. But to say that he was Man of the match is a joke seriously. Could have given to Watto for sheer effect, or to Tendulkar for his 100.

It's depressing, if England were going into the last day of a series against the Aussies with a win on the cards, there would be people locked out. Such a shame to see the cricket not being made as accessible as possible to the Indian fans on this landmark day.

Absolutely. Stupid ****ers at BCCI doesnt care a **** about the poor crowds. I am fully with Peirik of the Herald, when he said the BCCI should hang its head in shame. Am sure the crowds would ahve been much better in Mohali and Nagpur had the prices were better or one day tickets were available.

Another thing to note that, the stadiums are huge, seating around 50k people. So even a crowd of 10k (huge by other countires standards, barring MCG), would seem poor.

And except from Mohali and the first 4 days in Nagpur, the crowds were good at Delhi and Blore. It's case of proper logistics.

10,000 would not be big anywhere in Australia (except hobart so that doesn't count) or England

Still, we'd have no problem filling a 50k stadium a couple of times over if we were about to win a series against Aus. And cricket's (at best) the #2 sport in England.

As I say, it's a shame :(

Ponting disappointed with criticism

Cricinfo staff

November 10, 2008

Ricky Ponting has defended himself against claims that he put himself above the team on the fourth day in Nagpur and voiced his disappointment over criticism from Allan Border, the former Australian captain. India won the match by 172 runs, giving them a 2-0 series victory, after their chances improved dramatically on Sunday afternoon when Ponting employed part-time bowlers to lift the flagging over-rate.

The move saved Ponting from a possible suspension for next week's first Test against New Zealand, but eased the pressure for the batsmen after India had slipped to 166 for 6. India quickly increased their lead from 252 and eventually set the visitors a victory target of 382.

The tactics frustrated Border, whose name is on the series trophy with Sunil Gavaskar, and he said during the television commentary "I'm glad Ricky can't read my mind right know, because he's not going to like it". Border captained the team in 93 Tests in the 1980s and 90s and is a current Cricket Australia director.

"To tell you the truth I'm a little bit disappointed with some of the criticism, particularly from former Australian captains and CA [Cricket Australia] board members," Ponting said. "I had Jason Krejza bowling at one end, who ended up taking 12 wickets in the game, and Cameron White - he'd been the No. 1-picked spinner in the first three Test matches - operating from the other end for a couple of overs.

"That didn't work out the way I'd have liked, Michael Clarke was the next choice, but he'd been off the field ill and couldn't bowl until 3.10pm. And in the situation we were nine overs down." If a team is six overs behind schedule the captain faces the possibility of a suspension.

Ponting was upset by suggestions in the Australia media that he was more concerned about the possibility of a ban than a quick end to the India innings. "The thing I'm most disappointed about is there seems to be this inference out there that I've put myself totally ahead of the team," he said.

"Anybody that knows me, or knows the way I play my cricket or operate around the Australian team, or any team, would hopefully not say that's the case. I'd like to think as far as team players go, that there haven't been many more that have ever played for Australia that would do more than I have for the team."

Ponting said he had an obligation "to play the game in the right spirit" and try to bowl 90 overs in the day. "We speak about it at every team meeting," he said. "I've told the bowlers, the whole team, for a couple of years now that if we keep going the way we are there's going to be some time or moment where it's really going to come back and hurt us. I'm not saying that's right now, but there have been other times where we've had to do that."

Haha, couldn't Ponting come up with anything better, he and his team had a golden chance of retaining the trophy, and at that time he all of sudden realises he has an obligation to play the game in the right spirit, if he was so concerned about such stuff he wouldn't have let the over-rates be so poor in the first place.

Beat to it, Ponting's saying what is exactly expected out of him, no fresh insights there.

He has not still answered the most pertinent question, "Why did you care so much abt your impending suspension"

Stuart Clark's struggle in the two tests he played didn't overly surprise me.

I've always felt that bowling average in the low twenties flattered him - like Lee, he is a second tier quick and I expect his average to drift upwards.
I'm amazed that people think he would have made a big difference at Nagpur - the guy looked innocuous in the tests he did play and to me is quite clearly a bowler that will struggle on surfaces where he doesn't get that extra bounce.

I think for test cricket the BCCI should just open the gates of the stadiums for everyone, i think they can afford to do that much, because seeing empty stands when two of the best sides in the world were competing wasn't really good to see, and i can also imagine it would not be very exciting for the players to play in an empty ground either.

Dhoni carries on the Ganguly legacy

Excerpts:

Exactly eight years to the day since he first captained India in a Test, against Bangladesh in Dhaka, Sourav Ganguly marshalled the resources one last time. The ninth Australian wicket had fallen and the fielders were hovering around Cameron White and Mitchell Johnson with Harbhajan Singh and Amit Mishra having scripted a dramatic post-lunch collapse. It was a remarkable gesture from Mahendra Singh Dhoni, and it said much about how quickly he has grown into the job. A less secure man would have wanted to hog the limelight, but by ceding space to one of Indian cricket's all-time greats for a couple of overs, Dhoni showed just how aware he was of the bigger picture.
Awesome gesture. The lad has a sober head.

Spot on, how much will they lose out on Gate receipts? Peanuts. Maybe they can put a fee for the pavilion stands, but other stands, they should put it free or put a nominal price. The loss won't be more than the cost of the advertising on the boundary ropes.

WOOHOO, it's 2-0 with Dhoni winning 3 of his first 3 tests!!!! .... the results also shows why after the B'lore test I had said that OZ lost an opportunity to win its only test in the series at B'lore and the Ind team looks more likely to win one or two of the next to test

i guess with the OZ getting bundled out of 200 odd, the question of what would have happened if Ponting hadn't bowled his part-timers comes to rest as even if OZ had restricted India to around 200, it can be argued India would still have won

good gesture by Dhoni to let Ganguly captain in the end. Ganguly's retirement is one of the most graceful that I have seen in Indian cricket. Wishing him all the best of his future endeavors and hoping to see him do well for the Kolkatta Knight Riders :)

as for the future, the India team looks to be shaping up well. the weak link that needs to be removed is Dravid. if he had been dropped earlier, who knows we would have got to see Ganguly retiring after the series against England

a line up like the one below would make sense for the next series:

Batsmen: Sehwag, Vijay, Gambhir, Tendulkar, Laxman, Badri, Rohit
WK: Dhoni and ?
Pacers: Zak, Ishant, Munaf, Pathan
Spinners: Mishra, Bhajji, Chawla
