Ricky Ponting should be sacked

Location explains that imo.
Nah I'm actually pretty unbiased really.

I don't think Katich shows any signs of leadership at International level and he's really only just gotten himself a certain position in the XI.

I'm liking that he's been doing well lately, but yeah for mine he's not captaincy material.

Gangulys ban was for 6 matches yeah? If so, a potential 6 match ban makes it more of a hairy topic than 1 or 2.

All will be revealed I guess.

The funny thing is that Hussey's bowling was actually very tight, even if he didn't look like getting a wicket.

Cam White was the dire choice though obviously.

But what's the worst that could happen? Suspended for two tests against New Zealand? Not to sound arrogant but it's not like he's gonna make a huge game changing difference, and even if we were to lose against NZ I think everyone would rather have us draw this series in doing so than losing this series and winning against NZ.

Also his absence gives Clarke a chance at the captaincy and possibly a call up for David Hussey, something long overdue.
A player missing matches should always be discouraged where possible. There is absolutely no way the attitude "oh well Clarke can captain and Hussey can play, so never mind" should be taken.

Taking anyone lightly, even New Zealand, would be extremely unwise for Australia at the current time.

whilst sacrifising his team during possibly the most important series for measuring exactly where both these team are in the world scene. Not too sure about that really!!!
I did mention that, didn't I? Not too sure about "measuring where both these team are at in the world scene", but it's certainly the biggest series Australia have played for a fair while.

Meh, just been keeping the captaincy warm for Cameron White anyway
Not as ludicrous as people are suggesting. White's a natural captain and has been groomed for it for a while, I think he'd be better at it than Clarke that's for sure.

IMO White will be a permanent middle-order fixture for Australia once Ponting, Symonds and Hussey retire anyway.

Indeed, laughed at the comments regarding him never playing another Test etc.

It's not his fault he was picked as a bowler when he clearly is a specialist batsman (talented one at that), one of the cleanest strikers going around and only 25, big future in the middle order.

He may not be outgoingly confident bordering on arrogant like most modern captains but, contrary to popular belief, you don't have to be to be a good captain. Katich is an excellent tactician and was actually tipped for Australian captaincy at a very young age. In fact, it's believed in some quarters that his reputation as a "FAC" partly contributed to his random dumpings from the team when Ponting was establishing himself as captain.

I guess it depends what you want from your captain - a natural leader or a natural cricket tactitcian. Ideally you'd have both but obviously that's not always possible. Katich may not strike you as the natural leader type but he definitely has more cricketing naus than someone like Ponting and he copes very well in pressure situations too - that's all I want from a captain. The senior players can always aid in motivating a team but the captain is the one who has the ultimate decision on tactics so it's vitually important to have someone tactically sound.

The only thing that would stop me giving Katich captaincy is the fact that he hasn't really cemented his spot in the team yet. His credentials as captain stack up better than anyone in the country for mine, barring possibly White who shouldn't be captain for very obvious reasons..

On the topic of the thread, I'll reserve my judgment until after we know more about the decision. If Ponting hasn't acted alone in making it then I'd probably spare him. If it was his decision and the decision was indeed based on over-rates then he should be sacked.

how on earth do they so consistently end up so far behind the over rate anyway ? what the hell are they doing out there ? they know there's an over rate for crying out loud, how many warnings do you need

Katich is 33, that ship has sailed.

Ponting won't even lose the captaincy, White will be the next captain when Ponting retires.

That's a fair question. Mitch Johnson seems particularly bad from what I've seen in just taking a hell of a long time between deliveries. People talk about his athleticism and endurance, but if he take 8 minutes to bowl an over, then he makes the situation impossible for his captain...
