Dont think the statement is ironic or ill-informed. Lehmann is a vastly underrated player and its well known that he was unfortunate to not have played as much test cricket as he should have. AFAIC, you only have to watch the 2 of them bat to see the gulf in class between them. Katich isnt a bad player, but he's prone to bowlers with a decent inswinger.

However its rather irrelevant because in 2001, Lehmann had far more years of success both in England and Australia under his belt than Katich so it made little sense at that point. Its hard to imagine how someone like Martyn even made it ahead of him IMO.
See these posts:

Can't remember for sure but wasn't he picked when Steve Waugh was injured in England 2001?
Was referring to the irony of Katich in a userping situation (see Sri Lanka) that made me laugh.

I'm probably mistaken but I can't remember if Katich was directly selected ahead of Lehmann or not. After all, Katich was selected only to fall ill (late 90s), and returned at around that time, which I thought had something to do with it.
I just found the userping situation ironic in general, given how Katich was treated in Sri Lanka. Wasn't disputing your point. And Lehmann was more a victim of politics of sorts than actual ability and output.

Cricinfo: That catch in the last over, Haddin said rightaway that he was not sure whether it carried and Michael Clarke signalled that he thinks it bounced.

My my. Praise the Lord!

Martyn was quality but Lehmann should definitely played substantially more test cricket than he did as he was a far better player than a guy like Mark Waugh for extended periods

Possibly the most ridiculous selection involving Katich was his omission for Symonds in SL - stuffed both players' careers for a couple of years

Katich has had his fair share of bad selections indeed. As have a lot of Australian players over the last decade or so tbh. Off the top of my head I can think of Martyn, Love, Katich, Lehmann, Symonds who were unfairly selected and/or dropped in this decade. Its perhaps indicative that all of these poor selections didnt make much of a difference because the players that replaced them scored runs or in some cases the players who undeservedly came in were also good enough to score runs.
Btw, not sure I remember Katich's selection from the late 90s? Pretty dire selection if that is the case given his record had no dramatic peaks until then.

Haha Krezja, has been a memorable debut certainly. Not sure how to feel about him now. Has taken 6 wickets when everyone's looked about as threatening as a rubber duck, yet he's gone for 5 an over.

A strike-spinner of epic proportions.
